can someone explain to me re: Target...
How is it that groceries are so much cheaper there? Is there a catch? By catch I don't know what I mean, I just don't comprehend how, for example, a jar of Skippy is like $4.29 in a regular supermarket, but $2.12 in Target... (just an example).
Am I missing something? It just seems too good to be true.
Thanks

Re: can someone explain to me re: Target...
I don't know but somehow they tend to beat grocery store prices by a lot. The cereal is completely unbelievable almost 50% less than a supermarket. I love Target, just wished the meats and produce department were better and they offered more organic.

Haha agreed! I guess it's because it's not JUST a grocery store. I mean everything is cheaper at Target. I purchased a book at B&N for $16.99 and saw it at Target the very next for $6!

I know!!!
It really pays to shop there, even just for a few items. I haven't purchased any meat or produce there, but everything is pretty much unbeatable.

Re: can someone explain to me re: Target...
I think they are doing "Loss leaders" where they undercut the prices or sell it for near cost to get people in the store. then you wind up buying things in other aisles that are more profitable for them.

They have more buying power because of the overall size of the company.
Supermarkets are regional - you won't find Waldbaums in California, but you will find a couple of thousand Target stores there.

I tend to go at random off-peak hour.
I get very angry at the crowds in Target

Re: can someone explain to me re: Target...
Most groceries stores have unions so the employees have more benefits and higher pay (usually). They get overtime on sundays too. But that's just part of the cost difference

LOL.. My BIL calls it the hundred-dollar store. We can never get out of there without spending at least $100.

I never spend less than $50 at Target. Majority of the time I go there for one specific item.
I swear they pump something in the air that makes you think "OMG I totally need this napkin ring"

Exactly. They are buying WAY more Skippy for all their stores nationwide than Stop N Shop is, so they get a much better deal.
Plus they have their own distribution system so they save money on that end.
And since they don't use union labor their overhead is cheaper.

Re: can someone explain to me re: Target...
target does have great prices on many things.
i will give a PSA/warning at this time...
if you use coupons BE VERY CAREFUL, target has been in the news A LOT for short-changing its customers on coupons. if you're going to use them, know which ones you're using and how much it should be deducting. many coupons show up as $0.00.
but if you're careful, you can get a lot of stuff for FREE at target

Re: can someone explain to me re: Target...
They either buy them for less to begin with... or they just don't mark items up as much as supermarkets or other places.... or a combination of both, which is what I think the reason is.
I LOVE Target!! DH always rushes me out though...
