CIO Q at 17 months?

DS was a great sleeper & napper. Lately he's "off", sleeping only 40 minutes in the am (he used to sleep 2 hours) & another 2 hours in the pm (instead only 30 minutes).

The last week he's been waking up around midnight screaming. I was rocking him & putting him back down & he'd continue to scream. I was thinking it was his teeth so I gave him tylenol or motrin (which didn't help).

Then he'd be back up around 330...at this point I'd take him into my bed (mainly for my sanity & so I can get some sleep b4 work).

I'm thinking now we're being played. He was w/ MIL all day today & didn't sleep at all. His bedtime is usually 7...we put him down & he screamed & screamed....we took him out & he was nearly asleep on my lap, totally calm. I just put him in & he's been screaming for 15 minutes straight.

Do I let him scream & fall asleep from exhaustion? Could it be his teeth, although he was fine sitting up w/ us? HELP...or make me feel better about CIO. Thx.

Re: CIO Q at 17 months?

Around 15 or 16 months Sadie went through a thing like that too. We had no clue why but she suddenly was screaming like a lunatic with sleeping and she had never done that before.

I think it was an attachment thing for her combined with teeth or a growth spurt.

She would SCREAM (like crazy scream) and i would try to rock her to sleep. The second i evern moved to put her down she held on with a death grip and screamed again.

We let her CIO a couple times and she just kinda snapped out of it and went back to asking to go to sleep when she got tired. I also switched her to one nap around that time too.

in that case i would just do CIO. sounds like you are being played a bit. he knows you've come in and held him, rocked him or put him in your bed...no wonder why he gets mad when he's left to go to sleep on his own!Chat Icon Chat Icon i mean yes, it could be teeth but if its going on for an extended period of time i say it's just him depending on you. good luck! CIO is tough but i think in the long run it's worth it if everyone gets sleep!Chat Icon

Re: CIO Q at 17 months?

Thank you both guys...I think he was playing us.

We let him CIO & he lasted 45 minutes! He's sound asleep now.

I just don't see us being able to do it at 2:30 in the am w/ Gracie in the next room, but I guess we'll see what happens.

Jen, I think you're right too...we need to let him go to 1 nap...hopefully the afternoon one.

Thanks again!

I could of wrote this question word for word. Going through the same thing. My dd was a great sleeper. She has been waking up too. Now she won't even go back to bed in my bed. She wants to get up and just cries. Tonight I let her CIO, after an hour my dh took her out. How long is too long to cry???

I am so sorry you are going through this.

I agree with Jen that maybe it is time to transition to one nap. DS is 16 months old and we did it around 14 months because he was resisting the naps. Good luck!

Re: CIO Q at 17 months?

ds did this about two months ago. He was 17 months then too. He would cry forever before going to sleep. We did cio for three weeks straight. He would eventually go to sleep but not for upwards of 90 minutes past his 7:30 bedtime. We got in late one night and he was in bed a little after 8 and he went to sleep right away. We decided to try a 8 bedtime and you know what it worked. Your DS could be needing a later bedtime. Try 7:30 and see what happens. Also I agree he should only have one nap. Try keeping him up til after lunch and put him down.

Re: CIO Q at 17 months?

I don't know.. DS is 17 months and we are going through the same thing. It's horrible. He is in our room and we are literally building him a room right now. He will be in there by next weekend. So for now.. I bring him to bed. I just can't deal with the crazy screaming right next to my ear. But, he will be CIOing in a week. Don't feel bad. I would give him a shot of motrin before bed in case it's teeth and let him CIO.
