Help a hot roller virgin out?

I'll be the first to admit, I'm lazy about my hair. It's straight and thick, and in a boring style right now. No style, really. Just medium long.

I shower at night so I have plenty of time to allow my hair to air-dry. I wanted to look into hot rollers for a little more style, just for gentle waves, not for tight curls.

I don't need it to stay "just so" with hair spray but I would try hair products that help keep the wave, only if they're not sticky or stiff.

Any suggestions on what to get, how to do it, or hair products you use along with them?

i spray each strand both sides with flexible hairspray (pantene flx hold)

i leave the rollers in about 15-20 minutes, longer if possible until they are cooled

and after i take them out i spray the hair again

but that is it

Re: Help a hot roller virgin out?

I use them a lot.

I usually put them in, leave in for 15 minutes then take out and finger comb. I might use a light spray IF I need it to stay a certain way a little longer. But generally I like the 'natural' look and let the curls fall through out the day. I do it more for 'shaping' the style then for curling.

You have to see how your hair responds to them though, I have a friend whose hair is so thick and straight that it takes A LOT of product and finesse to get curls to stay put for any amount of time.

Re: Help a hot roller virgin out?

I just chopped off all of my hair but when it was long I used hot rollers all of the time, I have thick hair too.

I used these rollers and sometimes a 11/2 inch barrel to "perfect" it but you don't have to do that...

I would let my hair air dry at night like you said or blow dry it upside down for extra volume. I normally didn't use hairspray unless I wanted it to stay perfect, I kinda liked the way it looked when it fell out a bit. My hair also holds curls well so you have to experiment with that. Then I would take section by section and put the rollers in vertically rolling towards the back of my head. For the ones in the back I would put vertically still but towards the middle of the back of my head (if that makes sense)I normally did the ones in the back first b/c if they were more curly it would look ok but if the front got too tight it would be weird. For me I would not leave it in more than 15 minutes or else the curls would be too tight and look weird.

I couldn't find a good picture of it but you get the idea. I did this to my hair ALL the time and people thought I spent so much time on when I really didn't. Chat Icon I just chopped it all off and this is making me kinda wish I didn't, lol.

Good luck!! Chat Icon After a couple of times you'll definitely get the hang of it!
