Sorry, need advice (quickly) for an event today...Christening as a Godparent?

Hubby and I will be Christening our Godson today, and because of a whole bunch of family drama (on the parents side) - they're skipping a big party/dinner and only doing a small gathering after the church at the house w/about 8-10 people.

As Godparents, we're paying the donation to the church ($100) + food for the party that's being catered (just a few small trays of antipasti, etc, about $100).

We're trying to decide what to do in terms of a gift:

$250 savings bond + cross
or
$500 savings bond

Hubby thinks $250 savings bond only - and I feel that the $500 is for our Godson, while everything else (food is for everyone else to enjoy) and not something FOR our Godson...

I'd do $250 cash, not a bond. Bonds are really more of a hassle than anything else nowadays. Chat Icon

If you're concerned about the $ going to the child, you can open an account for the child with your name on it too, and continue to put $ in there for future gifts?

That's exactly the reason we're not doing cash...we have a significant amount of money to their first child and found out that the parents (father mainly) spent it on BS, meanwhile they told us it was placed in a college savings account.

I would do $150 Cash (since you were going planning on giving $250 savings bond) and cross.

I am not a fan of saving bonds.

I would do the $250 savings bond plus the cross. We did something similar. We also bought an I Bond instead because they have higher interest rates, the only difference it you dont get to write that you bought a $500 bond you write what you actually pay for it because it could end up being alot more than $500 when it matures. Bonds are the best way to go IMO you get more bang for your buck.

This is exactly what we did - and I don't understand why people keep saying bonds are a pain in the butt...they're SECURED!
