adult pertussis vaccine
i'm sure we've all seen that commercial... with the woman holding the baby & the sounds of whooping cough in the background
before that commercial, i never knew there was a vaccine for whooping cough for adults
so my quesion is, is this something that you ladies are going to get after giving birth? do you think its important to get it?

Re: adult pertussis vaccine
i am going to get it and the tetnus booster. a friend of mine who gave birth 2 weeks ago told me her OB said that anyone who will be spending lots of time w/ your LO needs to be up on their vaccines so they don't spread it to the baby.

Re: adult pertussis vaccine
I don't know yet. I know I should , but I don't know if I will. I was the same with the flu shot with DS. He was also a winter baby and my OB offered it to me but told me it was up to me, I declined because I had never gotten the flu shot before and had never gotten the flu. I probably should have gotten the shot, but I didn't. I'm torn....

Re: adult pertussis vaccine
Yes you should def get the vaccine! You can choose to get it postpartum or during pregnancy. I would def have DH get it as well. You will most likely have to get it from your Family Pract. rather than OBGYN. (obgyn's usually do not carry most of the vaccines)
I have already received the vaccine 2-3 yrs ago and making DH and family receive it as well.
I sell vaccines for a living, so I can certainly help with any quetions!

Re: adult pertussis vaccine
P.S. In California they currently have a Pertussis Epidemic. Already I believe 7 Infants have died and thousands of reported cases of pertussis. Usually when an infant gets pertussis it comes from someone in that same household.
Here is an older article on it from June,
ARTICLE
The number of cases are much worse sine this article ( from june)

Re: adult pertussis vaccine
I wish my OB was giving it, but they aren't. I plan on asking for it at the hospital, I assume SOME immunity can then be passed on through breast milk?

after giving birth at winthrop they offered DTaP, which i took them up on. i think it is worth it...i can handle it and it could help keep my kids healthy. they don't get tdap for a while.

Re: adult pertussis vaccine
I got it in the hospital and am currently breastfeeding so DD is getting my immunities. However, when DH tried to get it the receptionist at his Dr.s office claims they do not carry it and are not giving it. Anyone else have trouble getting it? I am going to call them back to see if maybe the person on the phone was confused but I wonder if this is common.

Re: adult pertussis vaccine
I got my tetanus vaccine last year and it HURT for over a week after!!! OUCH!!! If you're going to get that while PG, get it before you need to be carrying anything (ie: baby) soon after.
I'd probably get the pertussis vaccine if someone offers it to me. I still need to get my flu shot / swine flu shot. I wasn't TTC last year when it was around, but the baby is due in January and I don't need to worry about getting the flu between now and then.

Re: adult pertussis vaccine
I won't be getting the vaccine.
And I had whooping cough as an adult. . . so that says something anyway. My Doctors were pretty sure I got it from a child.

same here for the tdap....also the tetanus shot as well. I asked my OB what he thought and he recommended getting them both so I did.
eta: duh...the tdap is both of the above mentioned vaccines in 1 shot. The other one they offered me was the pneumonia vaccine

Re: adult pertussis vaccine
I was offered the TDaP in the hospital after having my son. We had a child in my girls' daycare who was diagnosed with pertussis last winter- so it was a no brainer for me.
DH got his free at the health department.

Re: adult pertussis vaccine
When I met with our pediatrician I brought this up. She said she will give it to both DH and myself at the hospital. Many cases of whooping cough are passed from parents to newborns.. since newborns cannot be vaccinated until 6 months for whooping cough. Cases are now springing up all over the US, so we're going to get it for sure!

I had the tetanus shot 9 years ago and it hurt like crazy! They are good for 10 years. When they offered me the Dtap in the hospital I said YES. I had a C-section and was on pain meds so the shot didn't hurt at all!!!
