Why ask questions like this on an interview for
an Administrative position?? "What would you say was your defining moment in your career"? Seriously?! Are you kidding me? If you're not applying for a doctor or lawyers position there really is no need to ask such a silly question. Come on now. This is for a secretary position. Were not talking a rocket science job or a job where you could make 200,000 a year.
Who else is with me?

yeah that is a crazy question, I'm an attorney and have never been asked something like that before!! Who do they think they are??
If you are asked that again, I'd just play it off like a smarta** and reply "my greatest defining moment in my career? it hasn't happened yet but I predict if you offer me this job, it will be my productivity at this company when I'm hired!!"..

I actually think the sentiment behind it is spot on. They are looking at your achievments and what job satisfaction you get for your duties. I also think they want to see what your skill level is in communicating.
I wouldn't have used "defining moment" but I would have asked for some a accomplishment you were proud of that brought you up to the next level or where you learned something.
Sounds like the person who interviewed you sees lots of people and generalizes the questions.

I agree. I also think that there are certain admin/secretarial positions that are indeed very specialized.
I know the one for my department especially has a lot of communication with the population we serve, which is people with brain damage. You can't put just anyone in that role.

I do see what you're saying. If the question would have been asked in those words, I would have felt more comfortable. However, it left me feeling as if they would be those stuck up and tightly wound type of people to work for. That is not the type of people I want to be around on a daily basis.

Very good point...
I have to be honest, this was not my initial reaction to the posted question but I do think you're right.
Maybe had the interviewer phrased the question the way you had it would have made more sense.

I completely agree.
It's not so much about the questions you're asked but how you communicate & answer the question.
Answering it along the lines of successful projects you've managed would have been a way to side step your "definining moment"
