Back pain in early pregnancy

Hi Everyone,

I am only about 4 1/2 weeks pregnant with my first and I am experiencing back pain.... in the center of my back around my spine and lower back, which at times goes to my thighs.

Is this normal? I am worried because these are the pains I get right before I get my period...If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. I don't see my doctor for another few days and I just want to know if it is nornal to feel these pains as well as to feel the way you do before you get your period.

I am also experiencing some cramps but the last time I spoke to my doctor she said it was normal... but now the added back pain makes me nervous!

What do you think?

Thanks,
Jacke

I did not have lower back pain that early on, but I did have some cramping. If you are concerned, I definitely think it's worth making a call into your doctor's office before your appointment, just for peace of mind.

Re: Back pain in early pregnancy

Apparently this is very normal.

I am 10 weeks now and have been experiencing the same thing.

I met with a physical therapist last week who specialized in prenatal care because my pain was excrutiating.

She said that the round ligaments and joints, even very eary on in your pregnancy, loosen to prepare your body for labor. The sacrum and all the joints connected to your pelvis get out of whack.

She was pretty spot on with everything I am going through. Here is what she recommended.

(1) you can take tylenol only (but that does't help me)

(2) use ice (not heat)

(3) buy a sacroilliac belt (find it on amazon.com) and wear it tight

(4) when you sleep you need 3 pillows. One between your thighs. One under the crook of your neck. And one to hug.

(5) when you sit make sure you sit up straight so that the pressure is not on your sacrum. If you roll up hand towels and put them under your butt where it meets that chair it is a little more forgiving and you can slouch somewhat

(6) when you get out of bed or out of the car keep your knees together and use your arms to get your body to pivot. Then plant your feet on the ground and get up.

I find that sitting and laying are the worst. I'm best when I'm walking around. Ice has been the only thing to give me relief so I highly recommend that.

Good luck and hopefully it won't last the entire timeChat Icon
