I don't mind having to press english on the phone or ATM- that is the way it is- many people in this country speak spanish.. just like when you go to China town you can do the ATM in chinese or in Astoria you can do it in greek.
Are we THAT intolerant of a society? It's very sad..
what I find sad is that a lot of these people have been here for decades and never bothered to learn English. I'm sorry, but that's just wrong! and we make it easy for them by having everything in both languages.
what if the Chinese and Indians, and all other immigrants stopped learning English? should we accommodate all languages?
when people move to another country, they should learn the local language and not expect that country to conform to them!
I think it's because we are a capitalistic society- meaning companies are going to do what they can to get more money- and if that means offering services in other languages, that's what they'll do.
In addition- MOST countries know English- when you go to other countries- a lot of times their signage is in the native language AND English- so I guess it's OK for them b/c they are accommodating us, right?
It just further plays into the attitude that we have here- that we want EVERYTHING on our terms. It's a global community- we all speak different languages- I just don't think it's that big of a deal to live in a society that has the ability to cater to different languages/people.
In Belgium they have two offical languages (dutch & french) and they get on fine..

This was never really a hot topic with me, up until last year. Through a friend of a friend, I met a very nice guy who had come here from Colombia. He came here legally and had a 6 year visa to stay in the states. He found a legal job on the books from which he has been promoted several times, and pays taxes like everyone else with an ID number. He's a hardworking, responsible, honest, sincere and polite man who's looking to better himself. He admits he wouldnt have the opportunites that he has here, back in Colombia. Though he speaks english pretty well, he enrolled in an english class that he attends 2x a week. From bad advice, he let his visa expire just a few months ago. He was all ready in the process of renewing his visa when he was caught. Visiting numerous lawyers and spending well over $7K, he finally exhausted all his hopes and stood before a judge just two weeks ago. With support from his friends AND his employer, a small miracle was given to him. The judge moved the case to december where he is required to have a lawyer with him. But the sad truth is, come december he will be deported. And because his visa has expired and he is here illegally, the US will never let him return here. So now what's to become of my friend? He worked here legally, he paid taxes, and he had health benefits from his job. I know this is just one story out of many stories, but the difference here (for me at least) is that he's my friend. I know many of you wont relate to this story, but for me putting a face to this whole debate has made me put things in perspective.
There's no way for him to become a citizen? Or could he have applied during his visa stay?
No, there's absolutey no way for him to become a citizen. Even though he was all ready in the process of renewing his visa, because he let it lapse AND he was caught, he will now be deported. He was actually VERY LUCKY that the judge set another court date. Unless he gets married before december, he will be deported.

I think it's because we are a capitalistic society- meaning companies are going to do what they can to get more money- and if that means offering services in other languages, that's what they'll do.
you are very right, it is easily proven by the communities people form... for example, Polish community in Greenpoint, Brooklyn - a lot of Polish people live there, in turn a lot of stores are opening that cater to that community... grocery stores carrying Polish foods, Polish speaking staff so they can communicate with its customers... it is all business... some people can go through their life not learning a word in English because everything they need is right there and if they cant understand or do something there are agencies that are willing to help them in order to make some money...

Actually we do make the rules....
I also think that the both parties, specifically the Republicans WANT us to think that people "get away with it" and "break the rules" and "we pay for it" b/c they would be MORE than happy to end ALL social safety net programs (social secuirty, welfare, WIC, etc)-
Yes taxes really stink- I would like to have some more money- but I also want to live in a society where those who don't have, whether citizen, or not, can get their basic needs met- food, water, shelter, clothing. In this day in age- where we have multiple TVs, the biggest houses in the world in terms of square footage, multiple cars, etc... we should be able to be able to provide that.

where does all the extra money for illegal immigrants education and healthcare come from? it comes out of the tax payers pockets. to the tune of several billion $ per year.

I am not sure if the way our ancestors did things is the right way or not, but it is our country's history. This country (Native Americans aside) was founded with English as the language of the nation.
I don't think it's crappy to expect people to be law abiding, tax paying citizens and/or people working to attain citizenship. And I don't believe it is intolerant to want to have English as the option of conducting business and speech in this country. Can there be other options - sure. Just don't make me have to confirm the one option that should be first!

I agree with Sassy
I alos want to add that many ehtnic communities have long thrived preserving their own culture and language. You can live in chinatown, for example, and never speak a word of english and live, work and play just fine. It limits you, but that's your choice. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. If people want to be a part of big business or expand beyond their area, they will, of necessity, be required to learn english, but I don't think there's anything wrong with people who choose not to learn english. If they can make their living, then more power to them. It doesn't hurt me any. If the show owners in chinatown, for example, can't speak enough english to make a sale to me, then they lose a customer, but again, that's their own choice. Maybe they have enough business with other people who only speak chinese.

I'm not interested in debating immigration, but I just wanted to add that in my experience working with foreign students, Wall Street is BEGGING for more of them b/c the US grads cannot - not WILL NOT - but CANNOT - do the work.
We NEED young people from other countries not just to do the menial jobs that "no one else will do" but the jobs that US students are not prepared for b/c we are sooooo behind in math.

I don't think America is a melting pot at all.....it is more like a stained glass window. Each group maintaining its individual "culture" while trying to create a unified picture.
We offer driving tests in other languages, translated letters, translation services...why would should anyone learn English?
Nothing irritates me more then watching the news and hearing how "I support my family in my country" So, do the immigrants really want to become citizens? What is their intention really?

He was all ready in the process of renewing his visa when he was caught. Visiting numerous lawyers and spending well over $7K, he finally exhausted all his hopes and stood before a judge just two weeks ago. With support from his friends AND his employer, a small miracle was given to him. The judge moved the case to december where he is required to have a lawyer with him. No, there's absolutey no way for him to become a citizen. Even though he was all ready in the process of renewing his visa, because he let it lapse AND he was caught, he will now be deported. He was actually VERY LUCKY that the judge set another court date. Unless he gets married before december, he will be deported.
What happens if he gets married? Does that enable him to apply for citizenship, or can he just not be deported?
To answer a few questions I missed. Had he taken care of everything before the lapse, Im sure he could have applied for citizenship. He admits this was his biggest mistake. He could get an employer sponsorship, but that wouldnt work out now because it would entail him having to go back to Colombia. Because of the lapse, the US wont let him back in with or without sponsorship. Plus Employer sponorship is a lengthy and costly process. If he does get married, he wont be deported, but he will have to apply for citizenship. But there are cases in which even if an illegal immigrant marries a citizen, if they dont have all the proper paperwork, they can also be deported. My word, we have all done our homework on this and what it comes down to is there is no way around it.

I don't think it's right versus wrong, I think it's legal versus illegal. Most of our ancestors did it the LEGAL way - waiting their turn, contributed to society. The population already here was not expected to take care of them.

Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'
What is going on? People act as if all the sudden immigrants, illegal and legal, just suddenly appeared. This country has been built on the backs of such people. While I think it would be great if they were all legal our government makes that difficult and I can understand not wanting to wait. As far as the tax burden, let's not pretend that many of our own citizens are a burden upon our country's economy. The illegals aren't the ones sucking our welfare system dry and they certainly aren't the only ones not paying taxes. As for our hospitals going out of business, that is due in large part to pharmacutical companies and their price gouging on drugs.
Should they learn English? It would make their lives a bit easier, but heck I know many Americans that can't speak English.

I think that one of the things that makes the US unique is that everyone does not assimilate. The US is one of the only countries where you can walk down the street and see restaurants with Chinese, italian, Korean, Cuban, Mexican, Ethiopian, Brazilian food, etc. If everyone had assimilated we would all be eating Yankee Pot Roast!
And the only reason we speak English is because it was the Brits who killed all the native americans. Sorry to sound harsh, but its kind of true - its not like in Italy where they have been speaking the language forever!!
I just think we shouldn't be so hard on people...
I agree.
A lot of people have this, "my ancestors did it THIS way so it's the RIGHT way and if they don't do it that way, it is the WRONG way"

I don't mind having to press english on the phone or ATM- that is the way it is- many people in this country speak spanish.. just like when you go to China town you can do the ATM in chinese or in Astoria you can do it in greek.
Are we THAT intolerant of a society? It's very sad..
I know a few people that are illegal and are from European countries and they overstayed their visas and if they got caught they can never come back. Is my friend in the wrong for letting her visa expire? Yes. Do people in this country do things like this all the time- like let a license or inspection expire? Yes-= should she be deported to never come back? no- it's idiotic- she's a functioning, english-speaking, assimilated member of society- she is married (to a citizen, and has a child)- but she cannot get on a plane or a train b/c she doesn't have ID.
Edited to say- my grand grandfather came over from Italy- while he DID learn English- he certainly spoke Italian better than english- and give the opportunity to conduct a phone call or a banking transation in Italian he would have- and I'm sure a lot of people on here's parents/grandparents would have done the same if it were available to them.
I understand what you are saying but where do you draw the line?
Thank you for calling press
1 for English 2 for Chinese 3 for Spanish 4 for Hindi 5 for Arabic 6 for Russian 7 for Bengali 8 for French 9 for Portuguese 10 for Japanese 11 for Malay 12 for German 13 for Panjabi 14 for Javanese 15 for Urdu 14 Bihari
Etc.............you get the point there are thousands of languages spoke in the world should we accommodate all of them?
Printed publications cost the United States millions of dollars each year....there are alot of things printed in spanish...from Driver license applications to pregnancy tests....and people may not realize it but it cost money for the additional printing....

wow, what made him wait so long to renew it?
Bad advice from an uneducated friend. His good friend is in the same position, here legally but let his visa expire. His friend said "No big deal, my visa expired years ago and yet no one is after me. So when you get a chance renew your visa, but its not like you have to get it done right away." What his friend failed to mention was he hasnt gotten caught either. Once your detained, that's it. Ugh, his only mistake will now cost him everything. Had he only mentioned something to one of us, I would have made it a point to get it renewed immediately.

QUOTE] do 2 wrongs make it right? yes, there are many dishonest people here who are citizens, but many more who are not.
