You dont need to find a one bedroom for $1000 a month. You need to have 10 people who all make 10 an hour living in a 3bedroom $2000 a month place... things become a lot cheaper that way.

Isn't that what the complaint is? That massive amounts of illegal immigrants are crowding into tiny places? Your solution is contributing to the problem.

Oh believe me that is not my solution. I was just pointing out that it IS easy to live in America for immigrants (or anyone else for that matter but I will stick with the topic at hand) when they dont mind cramming many people into a small house (with regards to making $10 an hour and being able to live on LI)

sometimes i wonder if this issue is really about assimilation- if those immigrants (specifically Mexican/Latin American in origin) would "assimilate", speak English, etc, most probably wouldn't have a problem with them.
In a country this large that is supposedly made up of a "melting pot" is is THAT important to have a homogenous culture. In addition- in a World made smaller by the internet and other technological innovations- is it THAT important that they speak English? The USA does TONS of business with foreigns countries- a lot of them who do NOT speak English, and we all get along.

The World is becoming smaller- to demand all immigrants to have the same culture, morals, etc. as us is crazy. Just like demanding it on the rest of the world.

.

It is that important that people speak English. Children are suffering in school because there HAS to be an ESL class. I, for one, would like to go to Walmart or Target and have the employees understand what I am asking them. No one is asking that they abandon their culture. I just think that ANY group of immigrants should have to pass a test to see if they are fluent in English.

maybe that was an exaggeration, but I believe the point was clear. NYPD should not make 1/4 of what LI cops make.

What do you personally do to help the cause?

complain on LIF. like everyone else here.

I don’t know anyone in the NYPD, but I still think it’s wrong what they pay them. at least the NYC teachers make more $ now!

If you live on LI, look at the breakdown of your property taxes - the amount that goes to county police is $$$, probably the highest proportion of the tax bill. That's one reason why cops out here make so much more.

They can also be drafted, but they are not allowed to vote for the President and other offices. Chat Icon Unfair much?

I don't know anything about them being elligible for a draft.

the new starting salary for the NYPD is atrocious, and while Suffolk Co cops have a few bad neighborhoods to patrol, I think we can all agree that even the worst parts of wyandanch and wheatley heights, and brentwood, don't even come close to bed stuy, and harlem.

sorry, I hope you don't mind me jumping into your debate....

Many of the NYPD do take the test when it comes up, but alot of them do not pass the test or are not approved for the transfer.

Just to backtrack - All Puerto Ricans since 1917 are U.S. citizens. They are considered "Statutory citizens". Just some random stuff I had to research when I was in law school...

I say this b/c in reading this thread- there seems to be a lot of resentment that the immigrants of today do not do what our immigrant relatives did in the 1890s-1930s when immigration is at its highpoint.

It's not resentment to point out the sacrifices and struggles prior generations had in order to become US citizens. And I don't think anyone here is saying anyone should abandon their culture or morals. I think if you want to be 100% immersed in your own culture, you shouldn't want to come to the US. And you certainly shouldn't expect that everyone accept and make your native language so accessible.

I'm not resentful, but I do get aggravated with having to select 'English' as the language I want to conduct phone conversations or ATM transaction in. Chat Icon

oooh sorry I was not trying to hijack. My husband has 5 cousins who are all cops, so it is a bit of a sore spot with me. They are all NYPD. Only one hass passed & was approved for the transfer into Nassau. They are all good cops, it is just a numbers game really. Chat Icon

Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'

This was never really a hot topic with me, up until last year. Through a friend of a friend, I met a very nice guy who had come here from Colombia. He came here legally and had a 6 year visa to stay in the states. He found a legal job on the books from which he has been promoted several times, and pays taxes like everyone else with an ID number. He's a hardworking, responsible, honest, sincere and polite man who's looking to better himself. He admits he wouldnt have the opportunites that he has here, back in Colombia. Though he speaks english pretty well, he enrolled in an english class that he attends 2x a week. From bad advice, he let his visa expire just a few months ago. He was all ready in the process of renewing his visa when he was caught. Visiting numerous lawyers and spending well over $7K, he finally exhausted all his hopes and stood before a judge just two weeks ago. With support from his friends AND his employer, a small miracle was given to him. The judge moved the case to december where he is required to have a lawyer with him. But the sad truth is, come december he will be deported. And because his visa has expired and he is here illegally, the US will never let him return here. So now what's to become of my friend? He worked here legally, he paid taxes, and he had health benefits from his job. I know this is just one story out of many stories, but the difference here (for me at least) is that he's my friend. I know many of you wont relate to this story, but for me putting a face to this whole debate has made me put things in perspective.

I think that one of the things that makes the US unique is that everyone does not assimilate. The US is one of the only countries where you can walk down the street and see restaurants with Chinese, italian, Korean, Cuban, Mexican, Ethiopian, Brazilian food, etc. If everyone had assimilated we would all be eating Yankee Pot Roast!

And the only reason we speak English is because it was the Brits who killed all the native americans. Sorry to sound harsh, but its kind of true - its not like in Italy where they have been speaking the language forever!!

I just think we shouldn't be so hard on people...

Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'

it makes me alittle angry to think about how much money I pay in taxes- to make other peoples lives easier/better

I would like some of my money back- to make my life easier/better

and I if I have to pay high taxes- I would like to first help the people who are americans who are living below poverty

( I feel like this sounds alittle harsh- but I think you know what I mean)

There's no way for him to become a citizen? Or could he have applied during his visa stay?

I agree.

A lot of people have this, "my ancestors did it THIS way so it's the RIGHT way and if they don't do it that way, it is the WRONG way"

I don't understand where we get this attitude from- it is really crappy...

I don't mind having to press english on the phone or ATM- that is the way it is- many people in this country speak spanish.. just like when you go to China town you can do the ATM in chinese or in Astoria you can do it in greek.

Are we THAT intolerant of a society? It's very sad..

I know a few people that are illegal and are from European countries and they overstayed their visas and if they got caught they can never come back. Is my friend in the wrong for letting her visa expire? Yes. Do people in this country do things like this all the time- like let a license or inspection expire? Yes-= should she be deported to never come back? no- it's idiotic- she's a functioning, english-speaking, assimilated member of society- she is married (to a citizen, and has a child)- but she cannot get on a plane or a train b/c she doesn't have ID.

Edited to say- my grand grandfather came over from Italy- while he DID learn English- he certainly spoke Italian better than english- and give the opportunity to conduct a phone call or a banking transation in Italian he would have- and I'm sure a lot of people on here's parents/grandparents would have done the same if it were available to them.

what I find sad is that a lot of these people have been here for decades and never bothered to learn English. I'm sorry, but that's just wrong! and we make it easy for them by having everything in both languages.

what if the Chinese and Indians, and all other immigrants stopped learning English? should we accommodate all languages?

when people move to another country, they should learn the local language and not expect that country to conform to them!

My great grandfather came to this country illegally - jumped ship in the early 1900's. I don't think the way our ancestors came to this country, learned english or did anything is relevant to the discussion. It's a different time period.

If there were no jobs available, immigration would stop. I've never heard of people trying to raft the other way to Cuba or jump the border INTO Mexico.

I'm not sure what the solution is - I don't support illegal immigration. What I do support is changing those laws to make immigration into this country safer period.
