So, what would you have done?
I went to Red Fox salon in Huntington yesterday, and got my eyebrows done, plus my lip and chin
I got a pedi, and then during the mani, the lady was putting the lotion on my hands and arms. She pointed to my arms and said, "ooooh - HAIRY!"
I'm a brunette. I am not Robin Williams on my arms, but its just dark hair. But then I got so self conscious. I even asked, "hairy???" and she said "yes."
I laughed it off, but I have to say, it really upset me. I mean, it's obvious I have some hair issues if I need to wax my whole friggen face - why even rub it in regarding my arms????
Good thing she said it BEFORE the tip. Yes, I did tip, but not as high as I would if she kept her comment to herself....
Should I call and tell them, or just let it go? I go there when I get my mani/pedi, and I have to say, I don't want to go back now because of that.....

She said it so that you would buy another service! More $$ if you wax your arms too. I wouldn't take it personally, I'm sure you aren't that hairy!
ETA: I would be put off by the comment though!

they always say stuff like that....they are just trying to get you to pay for another service.
i was getting my eyebrows waxed once and they pointed to my upper lip and said "hairy"...i just have to roll my eyes b/c they are so insensitive...they just want another buck. don't let it worry you!

That's what I thought, but who in the world would wax their arms? No offense to those who do - but to me, completely waxed arms just sounds freaky - legs, sure - that's one thing - but arms???
So, why didn't she at least say it when she was waxing my face? Or, say, that they could wax it for me when she commented on how hairy I am?

I get my eyebrows threaded @ a west indian place, and apparently a lot of Indian/West Indian women wax their WHOLE body! Face, arms, everything. I'm not that brave.

I wax my arms...in fact, I know quite a few people that do I guess maybe that's why when I looked around the salon, I noticed in comparison my arms were a lot hairier! I dunno - I'm ok with my gorilla arms, I guess I guess I never thought it was so common!

Re: So, what would you have done?
Oh please! I agree with others, anything for another buck! They have a field day with me at my nail salon!
I used to do eyebrow wax there, but switched to threading, so I get my brows done elsewhere. every time I am in for a mani/pedi, they tell me my eyebrows and lip needs to be waxed. They lady even offered me once to wax the top of my hands (yes! my fingers on the back side of my hands are hairy)! I also have hairy arms, but it's not super dark, not a ton and I think it looks natural. I know a lot of ladies who wax their arms, but to me, it's not worth it, I couldn't take the upkeep and stubbly arms!

Re: So, what would you have done?
I have gotten that comment before too at the nail salon!! I don't go to that salon anymore, but it's for different reasons.
Trust me .. they say it to so many women just to sell their services and get more money!
I often feel like these places have no tact. Once I went for a pedicure and realized I needed to shave my legs badly- but I went anyway figuring they have seen it all .... well ... I'm sitting there hoping to keep my legs under the radar, when the woman doing my pedicure goes "ohhh you shave?" ...... and I look at her in shock (and the woman in the chair next to me of course looks over at my showcased hairy legs to see what the woman was talking about!! ) and I go .. "well, usually.. but obviously not lately"

Re: So, what would you have done?
Same thing happened to me when I got my last mani/pedi/brows. Different salon though. After the woman did my brows, she said "Lip wax too, right?" I have never waxed my lip, I am virtually hairless except for my legs. She just wanted me to pay for another service. Don't let it upset you.

Re: So, what would you have done?
Oh it's all about money! They tell me and my friends all the time to get our lips done when we get eyebrows and we have ABSOLUTELY NOT A SINGLE hair anywhere -- in fact, all of my hair on my body is blond including even my legs after years of shaving! They do it just to get money! Don't even give it a second thought - it's not you!!

Re: So, what would you have done?
I wax my arms, but sometimes I get lazy and don't do it for awhile.
Anyway, one time a long time ago I was getting a mani, and the manicurist points to my arms and says "Too hairy! Wax?" I decline the service (since I do it myself when I get around to it)
She then looks at me and says:
"Jewish?"
WTH? I don't happen to be Jewish, but seriously? When did hairy = Jewish? So weird, and incredibly offensive.

Re: So, what would you have done?
They do that at my nail salon as well. I tell them that I have no plans to get my forearms waxed BUT my neighbor upstairs used to get it done only in the summer so people do it.
I hate when they say stuff or get mad if I have to cancel or move my appt.
Plus I think business is off right now and they are always looking for ways to get more services out of the customer. Constantly asking about 10 min. massages, stuff like that

Totally unrelated -- I've been there a few times (the last time was my last) and i"m not a huge fan. i think their pedi's are overpriced and of all the times i've been there, the nail technician has ALWAYS painted over my cutical, or missed a portion of my nail. it's a nice place but I'm not totally thrilled with them.
ps, sorry they made you feel bad about your arms... i agree with the other girls, i've had other places point out my 'stache and ask if they can wax it!
