J&M don't have any 2-3 word sentences. They are picking up new words every day, so I'm not concerned at all - theey haven't been to their 18 month appt yet.

Re: How many words/sentences did your ped want at DC's 18 mos checkup?

Sadie has been talking in sentences like that since like 14/15 months, but I know she is very much ahead of the "norm" with her speaking.

She'll be 18 months at the end of the month and my ped has not even asked anything about her speech except for "is she talking and learning new words?"

I think that drs and people get SO caught up in the "how many words" game when really, in a year or two no one will remember or even care how much they talked at this age!!!!!

Just so you know...

as an SLP, we normally wouldn't count "phrases" like "what's this" or "all done" as two-word phrases because the child usually learns it all at one. they don't realize that they are two separate words with different meanings, KWIM? they learn the whole thing as a phrase....

I hope that makes sense!

Things like "more juice" would count....

WHAT???? 2-3 word sentences?? For real??

Liam has had a word explosion from about 15 months on. We go on 7/26 for his 18mos appointment. I used to be concerned, but everyday he is saying something new. I also find he is more verbal than some 2 year olds we hang with.

Re: How many words/sentences did your ped want at DC's 18 mos checkup?

I needed to add this that at her last checkup which was her 15 mos checkup all he asked was if she's saying "mama and dada" correctly so to go from that to 2-3 word sentences I was NOT expecting that...

Same here...DS says about 7-10 words @ 17 months...we just saw the ped today and she said he's ahead of where he should be at this point. By 18 months, I think she said he should have about 10 words. Sentences seems a bit much this young IMO.

What, really? DS is 22 months and only started with 2 word sentences this week! That's putting together on his own... he had one phrase, "all done" by 18 months.

This post, has a link to developmental checklist that might help.

eta: doctors get overwhelmed and tired and can confuse the milestones, just hope they are not confusing meds or vaccines or anything like that. We love our ped, but last appointment he was confusing our 4m old with a 6m old, and it was annoying as heck ... "is he even trying to sit up" "what do you mean he's only 4m" "oh, right, right" it made me Chat Icon, but understandable sometimes, DS acts like a 6m old, looks like a 6m old, he just can't move like one yet.

My kids are almost 20 mos and do not speak in 2 or 3 words. They probably have about 60 words and the only ones they combine is mo nack(more snackChat Icon ) I wouldn't worry about it unless she wasn't speaking at all.
