but seriously, what about this post?
were late talkers not exposed to words?Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

i am a mom of a late talker. i can't imagine that kids talk at 9 mos, i am sure they do, but to me it isn't reality at all

ROFL, my son had a speech delay, I had a FEELING I should have talked to the little bugger once in a while!

To be serious though, someone doubted that saying "at" for "cat" counted as a word. It does. If a word approximation is used consistently in the correct context, it does count as a word. I'm not a speech pathologist, but I learned this when my son got speech therapy.

serious?? Chat Icon

i'm going to behave . . .

Chat Icon dramatic, huh?

it is hard for moms of late talkers to imagine this goes on. no one is saying it doesn't, but when your 18 mo old says nothing, it is shocking to think of an infant saying hi to a cat

oye vey. number one she doesn't say hi to the cat, she just says AT Chat Icon

number two - it was not clear that your statement was reflective of YOUR situation and your situation only. that's not what you wrote. you said "i can't imagine that kids talk at 9 months . . . it isn't reality at all" COME ON PEOPLE!

Re: speech at 9 months

To the OP.. it is possible and I was actually going to FM you and tell you that I posted something similar when DD was younger and actually had a couple posters question me through FM and make all sorts of comments.

My ped didn't believe me about how much she talked (she is people shy) until she was writing in her chart outside the door and heard her count to ten (I have to help with 5 and 8 LOL) and ask for water, complete with a please and a thank you.

I have 4 children ...2 of them were early talkers just like your DD. It's quite possible and if people dont believe you then that's their problem...

please don't, I love to know, all children are different and develop differently! I think its great! be proud! and be prepared for other to be jealous Chat Icon

I'll flaunt that my 4m old knows what his feet are, when I say "feet" he also knows what a kiss is and opens his mouth for one, when anyone says "kiss" its hysterical but it will be me in 5 months flaunting what you are I bet ... and if its not I'll be thrilled with anything my DS does nonetheless.

gosh, everyone is so uptight...CHILL OUT please

this is getting ridiculous, IMO

miki talked early, she did, I saw it, I experienced it, I was proud

KJ, not so much, does not make me less proud of him

as others have said, all babies develop at their own pace

My OPINION was that at 9 mo. while babies are developing their language and beginning to communicate, I think it is more babbling and imitating and repeating of sounds which is how infants begin to form their vocabulary and associate words with objects.

I've heard my DS say things like mama, baba, dada...but I dont consider them words per se. More of putting syllables together and experimenting with sounds to form his vocabulary.

If your experience with your 9 month old was different, your opinion would be different. IMHO, as well as my experience, a 9 month old infant and even younger, can have many concrete words for objects that are used correctly and often. All kids develop language skills and other skills differently, this is why there is a wide range. Just because it wasn't your experience, does not mean that it cannot happen.

My son had many words for objects and things at 9 months that were used in the correct context consistently. And nobody would have believed it...thank God we have it on videotape! Chat Icon

My grand-niece is 6 months older than my son and she had a HUGE vocabulary at 9 months. I thought there was something wrong with my son when he didn't have half her vocabulary at the same age. I have since learned that boys and girls speak at different times and every child is different.

I think we should all try to support each other and not judge. (A novel concept by LIF standards, I know, but let's give it a shot)

Thats great! Sounds like my daughter!

For all you non-believers, my daughter was talking in short sentences at LESS than a year, around 10 mos., saying things such as "all gone" "thank you" etc. There was no mistaking what she was saying. And then my son didnt even say mama until he was 2. If I had ds first, I probably wouldnt believe it myself, but it does come early to some kids.

I agree. Why do threads have to turn so bitter? The poster has an early talker, and what happens... a bunch of parents of later talkers get defensive and imply that she's lying. Meanwhile, the parents of the earlier talkers claim that their kids are speaking early because they were exposed to more language, thus implying that the late-talker parents don't talk to their kids enough. Nasty and uncalled for from both sides, we women love to tear each other down....

Re: speech at 9 months

I honestly don't understand why she is being questioned so much. As wonderful as it is, it's what? 11 words. That's awesome - but not unbelieveable. She isn't claiming her DD is reciting poetry in 3 languages, she knows a bunch of words (or approximations of words). It's not so far fetched. There's is probably nothing she did that other moms aren't doing, and if your child is a late talker - nothing wrong with that either, nothing anyone did "wrong". Every child develops at their own pace and whilel I think we all do what we can to foster development honestly, sometimes I feel like we don't have a lot to do with it all Chat Icon

I agree with this. I mean, environment does play a part but at the end of the day we are wired to learn at a certain pace.

Luce is just about Sophia's age and babbles up a storm but doesn't talk yet. and if the amount of "talking" i do on here is any indication, I don't shut up when I am home, either Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

let's get on with it already.

Good for your daughter! I was an early talker so it was a little bit of a shocker for my mom (she was taking care of DS at the time) when DS didn't really start forming words until he was 12 months.

And I can't believe how some posters get all catty and doubt the OP...just bc YOUR experiences were different that doesn't mean it can't happen.

Honestly, I don't care or better yet it really doesn't matter when a kid starts crawling, talking, teething, when they knows their #,s letters and colors, when their potty trained etc.... b/c they all catch up in the end.
Valerie's sweet little Sophia might be an early talker but a late walker-kwim? just an example.
Go Soap's - for being such a talker!!!!Chat Icon

Out of my 4 kids- 2 spoke early. They just spoke early...it means exactly that nothing more nothing less.

I agree. And, ftr, my kids are your average boys. They are 19 mos and have about 50 words or so I think. They are not all intelligible to others but we know what they are saying AND they know what we are saying so in my book...thats a word! Foster that, introduce her to reading early. Maybe think about Your Baby Can Read...

Re: speech at 9 months

Anyone who knew Ava at that age would agree that it's entirely possible for a baby that age to have a large vocabulary. Ava was speaking in clear sentences well before she was a year old. It's just who she is. I was called out quite a bit by people on here for it, too. In fact, I would get nasty FMs about it accusing me of lying, when plenty of women on here knew Ava at that age and could attest to the fact that she had a ridiculous vocabulary. Don't stop posting about your amazing little girl. All our kids have their strengths, every last one of them, whether it be speech or whatever. Chat Icon

Re: speech at 9 months

I think the basis behind the drama that always ( ALWAYS! ) comes out in these posts is that it is great to hear amazing things like how smart your chidl is.... WHEN it's YOUR child.

For the most part, no-one else wants to hear about it ( notice, I said for the most part) ...And sorry if that is harsh , it's the truth.
I don't neccesarily feel that way about it, but I think I know enough about people to realize if I posted something like" My 2 week old sat up unassisted....Does yours? " ...It would be a way for me to brag and not look like bragging. ( Sorry again, this is an EXAMPLE). I'm not directing this at the OP, NOR saying this is a bragging post AT ALL...Just simply showing how it can get misconstrued in a more straight forward example.

Most kids don't have words at 9 months, most kids dont roll over at 2 months, most kids dont walk at 9-10 months, so when a post comes up and the parent is proud of their baby, it makes others insecure and just plain nervous about THEIR baby. Its natural...and with a big group of mom's..inevitable!

Bottom line is no one is gonna be proud of your baby like YOU are, and so unless you word something perfectly..."someone" is gonna get upset/worried/annoyed etc....
