There is a difference between "communication" and "words." I would say a child pointing to a cat and saying "at" definitely shows that she is associating the word with the thing. Some people might not truly consider that a word yet, but if she is associating the sound with the object, then it shows comprehension. If a child isn't doing that yet but is engaging with his/her environment, then that is definitely the pre-requisite for language development and comprehension. All sounds good to me!

DS is 9 months and says dada and nana. The other day he clearly said hi but i havent heard it again since. And every now and then he speaks german and yells "NINE" and slams his hands down when he doesnt wanna do something and gets mad

DD#1 still speaks in her own language at 21 months! I call her "Morimoto" because it sounds like Japanese to me most of the time. She does speak some words and understands what we are saying but no sentences that other people would understand. It sounds like your DD is definitely advanced. That is awesome!!   
DD is 17 months and is the same way.

If you believe the woman I ran into yesterday, her DD was talking in full sentences at 7 months so I'd say your DD is "talking" - saying her words and associating them with objects or actions. Every child develops differently - enjoy the learning with her.

Sorry to upset you.
At 9 mo. I think babies imitate sounds so it may sound like words but I think it's still a couple of months before I would consider it an actual word with association.
I don't want to turn this into a drama thread but it's very presumptuous of you to assume that it's too early for a 9 month old to associate words with meanings/objects and that my daughter is merely imitating sounds. How is it “imitation” when she clearly says her version of CAT and points to the cat, or when she's touching the cat? She says "baby" when I give her doll, which we call baby. She waves and says BYE BYE when we leave. That’s clearly not imitation but true word association. I guess I'd have to take video to prove my point  
I was not assuming anything and quite frankly I think the rolling of the eyes and comment about the video to prove it was unnecessary. You are being defensive over nothing.
My OPINION was that at 9 mo. while babies are developing their language and beginning to communicate, I think it is more babbling and imitating and repeating of sounds which is how infants begin to form their vocabulary and associate words with objects.
I've heard my DS say things like mama, baba, dada...but I dont consider them words per se. More of putting syllables together and experimenting with sounds to form his vocabulary.

If your experience with your 9 month old was different, your opinion would be different. IMHO, as well as my experience, a 9 month old infant and even younger, can have many concrete words for objects that are used correctly and often. All kids develop language skills and other skills differently, this is why there is a wide range. Just because it wasn't your experience, does not mean that it cannot happen.
My son had many words for objects and things at 9 months that were used in the correct context consistently. And nobody would have believed it...thank God we have it on videotape!

Ok really? Bottom Line - EVERY child is different and develops differently -
Just b/c MY kid didn't speak at 9 months old, doesn't mean it's impossible for someone else's kid to do it !!
If the OPs 9 month old is developing her speech early - that's AWESOME.
It doesn't mean anyone else's kid is behind, and I don't see any reason for people to be SO defensive and question her? -
I personally wouldn't say 'at' was a word, until she said CAT - but that's ME. (and why I think maybe I'm too hard on my poor kid !!)
Regardless, I can appreciate WHY the OP would call it a word b/c obviously her kid is associating "at" as the CAT - she just can't SAY the "C" yet ..........

Some kids talk early, some talk later. They will all even out someday.
Often on these boards, if your child does something early it is seen as bragging or exaggerating. There is nothing wrong with being proud of your daughter. 
My DS was saying words while pointing at the correct object since 6/7 months. I have videos of it and even now looking back I am so amazed by the things he did.
I agree with this. I have no idea exactly how many words DS had at 9 mos but I do recall he did have several that he used in the right context.

This post had me freaking out a little bit. My son will be 9 months old next week and he doesn't say a blessed thing. He definitely babbles, mamamamam, gaggagagagaga, bababababbabaa, dadddadasdaa, mostly bababababab, but he doesn't associate it with anything, I don't think. He really does it randomly. He does know when I'm saying baba to him that I'm getting a bottle for him because he'll usually calm down and wait. That's about it.
The only little tidbit of understanding that I noticed out of him other than the bottle, was him watching Yo Gabba Gabba the other day, when they were doing funny faces, and he seemed to try to mimic. That's about it. But I also think he might be a little behind becuase he's not crawling yet, either.

and sorry, but the in the quoted post just pi$$ed me off, as if i was being questioned, or to say i was BSing/embellishing. this was a simple thread about early development. i wanted to see where my daughter was on the speech spectrum. as I stated before, every child develops differently.

don't worry, my son will be 10 months tomorrow and he says nothing (he is JUST starting to babble more now)
he did not crawl until 9 months - remember, crawling isn't even a milestone, some kids never crawl

He chatters all day long with baby talk but no real words come of it. I think every child develops differently though depending on what they are exposed to
i agree totally about the exposure thing.
every single word I listed ive repeated over and over again with her. she shocked me yesterday when she said "JUMP!" but then I realized it relates to her exersaucer. at the end of one of the songs they say "JUMP!" and I always said it to her to make her jump. She'd laugh and jump. Yesterday she was standing, holding onto the outside of the exersaucer when she said it. mama/dada/nana/baba are typical first baby words. i always say "sophie say CAT" when the cat is near. she giggles and says "aaT!" whenever I go to pick her up I say "up?" and put my hands out to pick her up. she'll repeat it back, or say UPPP when she wants to be picked up. we say "yayy" when we clap. if she's happy or wants attention she'll clap and say "yay". when she was younger i'd say mmmmm while feeding her to get her to eat. now she says it herself when she tastes something she likes.
she's a trip. she was slow on the rolling/crawling but I feel like she's a little faster with the speech. but like you said, every child develops at a different rate
but seriously, what about this post?
were late talkers not exposed to words?
i am a mom of a late talker. i can't imagine that kids talk at 9 mos, i am sure they do, but to me it isn't reality at all

ITA! My mom said both me & my sister spoke when we were 9 months. I remember my sister doing it too. And I even walked at 9 months. You're not bragging, you were asking if it was normal. And if you were bragging..so what! You are allowed to be proud of your child. I think it's awesome she says so many words.

Not only is this your opinion, but it is also scientific fact about how language develops. Like everything else, language develops behaviorally. shaped by conseqquences (parents, caretakers, etc)
It definitely is possible for a 9 mt old to develop language this way. Not every 9 mt old does - but every speaking person on this planet DOES develop language this way according to their own development.
All language develops initially through receptive skills (listening to what important things are being called - usually anything related to primary reinforcement - food, shelter related) and anything related to primary reinforcement (ie - the people who keep you alive by providing you primary reinforcement- mom, dad). When the baby, toddler, etc - starts to use those important words expressively or approximations of those words - they are reinforced by receiving that item (I say baba, I get baba) or through social reinforcement (Hey - that awesome lady who keeps me alive on a daily basis is going INSANE when I accidentally said something. What was that thing I said so she responds that way again? Oh yeah, Ma ma)
So, you are absolutely correct. So, if you see - it IS possible for kids at very early ages to do that. Not common, but common enough at 9 mts. 2 mts, no - anything before 6 mts I think is questionable - but closer to a yr old, sure!

I didn't see him talk at 9 months, but at 12 months he was singing EE-I-EE-I-Ohhhh so I believe it!

it is hard for moms of late talkers to imagine this goes on. no one is saying it doesn't, but when your 18 mo old says nothing, it is shocking to think of an infant saying hi to a cat

I have to agree with Janice I was a little shocked that the OP said her DC at 9 months was saying all those words...but ok, if that's the case, then it's great....who are any of us to judge or question it. Maybe it's not the norm but I'm sure stranger things have happened.
