This ain't no Long Island wedding

We are going to our friend's wedding this weekend in Potsdam, NY

Never heard of it? Think left of bumfuuck - near Rochester Chat Icon

They are planning on having people camp out on the groom's parents 40 acres of property, and have portopotties set up for the guests.

No showers though Chat Icon

They got engaged 2 years ago.

The sister of the groom - another good friend of ours - doesn't know what time the wedding is.

This wedding is so poorly planned - it baffles me!

By the way - we are staying at a motel nearby! We don't mind camping, especially at the folk festival, but on someone's property with a 3 yr old and no amenities at all - not so much! Chat Icon

Does this sound crazy to you? Especially not knowing what time the wedding is? When are people supposed to show up???

It sounds fun, as long as you will be sleeping in a hotel

I would LOVE to do that Chat Icon

Re: This ain't no Long Island wedding

My cousins did this...sort of. They have a farm on the top of a mountain in Binghamton. They had people camp out on their property & had portapotties & it was the weekend of the hot air balloon festival that went right over their house. They had a dance floor & DJ but received gifts like a calf, a cooler full of beer and other assorted household items. Definitely NOT NYC/LI wedding.

Not knowing the time would concern me though. Good move on staying at a hotel...we did also.

I went to school in Potsdam...it's no where near Rochester!

Think 45 minutes from the Canadian border. About 3 hours north of Syracuse

Where's the wedding and where are you staying?

Thank you for clarifying - bride and groom actually live in Rochester so I get confused geographically up there - sorry for being such a dumbass Chat Icon

We are staying at Smalling Motel - they boast luxuries like A/C and HBO so it sounds like a slight step up from a tent! Chat Icon

I stayed at Smalling Motel a few years ago, it isn't that bad. Doesn't look like much from the outside but the rooms were clean. The Clarkson Inn in the village of Potsdam is REALLY nice but it also expensive. There is alot to do there and the town is really cute. Hope you have fun!! The car ride is going to be really LONG, I believe it takes about 7-8 hrs from LI, but it is a beautiful drive. If you are looking for a place to eat, Maxfield's is really nice, it's right in town.

It's 7-8 hours if you go at least 80 the entire way. I'm in Port Jeff and it usually took me closer to 9 hours.

Wow all this talk of P-dam is taking me back! Maxfield's was OK but Sergei's pizza rolls are the best (especially at 2 am when you're stoned Chat Icon )

I never stayed in Clarkson Inn...I only saw the lobby and it's really nice. If you're looking for a step up from Smalling Motel there's a Days Inn in Canton that my parents used to stay at when they visited me...it's about 10 minutes away

That sounds awesome, but then again, very little of the camping I have done involves places with amenities Chat Icon

It is a gorgeous drive to Potsdam, especially once you get off of the Northway and start heading west. I LOVE the Adirondacks Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: This ain't no Long Island wedding

My cousin got married just outside of Rochester. It was definitely NOT a Long Island wedding. It was outside and looked like we were in the woods. The "hall" was so small. Not much dancing, DJ was Itunes from someones computer. We did have fun though since it was family, but it was very different.

I'm sure you'll have a great time!

camping out for a wedding? not for me. Chat Icon but whatever floats your boat I guess.

Were there invitations sent? Did those not have a time?

However Potsdam is actually a beautiful little town. Far. but it's really cute.

Re: This ain't no Long Island wedding

My SIL's wedding was in bumfuuck, NY last year!! It was the craziest thing ever....I was twitching over the disorganization, the plywood dancefloor and the dais that became a beer pong table after the boxed wine started to flow.... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon And the fact that the tent and tables didn't have a floor underneath so I wore flip flops with my dress

I have to admit it was a lot of fun and not at all stuffy or pretentious.

Re: This ain't no Long Island wedding

Weddings are so different once you get off LI.

I am originally from the Hudson Valley and we had our wedding there. Not only did it cost about 1/3 of the price we would've paid down here, but all of our LI guests told me they had such a blast because it was "different than the same old same old".

We booked a hotel with a bar for all of our guests to stay at for the weekend, and we arranged transportation back and forth to the wedding hall.

We left "goodie bags" in the hotel rooms as well with maps and fun things to do in the area, as well as directions to the local mall, CVS, etc.

We had our ceremony outside and DH and the best man were brought in in an old fashioned car. It was a fall wedding in a garden setting in the country, and it turned out to be 80 degrees that day. We did a butterfly release as well. Our guests also raved about how beautiful the area and scenery and drive was.

The wedding hall was not as glamourous or updated as the places down here, but we got SO MUCH more for our money.

Growing up most of the wedding receptions I went to were held in local firehouses or VFWs. And it's still that way for the most part. Just a totally different way of life. Plus people are just not as well off.
