Bermuda! Who has been??
Who has been? On a cruise or not!
We are lucky enough that my brother is doing great in his recovery -- so great that he can now take a WELL deserved vacation!!!!
He has Christopher for two straight weeks, all to himself, every August. Since Kenneth got hurt we always talked about "the minute he's well enough to do a vacation". The time is now! We were discussing last night what he would like to do. He pointed to the calendar for August and pointed to the cruise brochure. So, a cruise it is! We are all going - his treat for taking care of him!
It is a Royal Caribbean out of NY to Bermuda for seven days. So, we have three days there. Tell me ladies -- what is there to do that is a MUST? Also, any feedback about the ship/line? It is the Expolorer of the Seas.
Let me know! I would love as much info. as possible... great ideas as to what to do, great beaches to visit, shopping, sights, etc.
THANKS!!!

Re: Bermuda! Who has been??
I have been to Bermuda twice and LOVE.IT.
16 yrs. ago we flew and stayed for 5 days, almost 2 years ago we cruised.
RCCL is only a 5 day cruise while NCL is a 7 day cruise. You are in Bermuda for less time with the RCCL cruise but I actually prefer RCCL over NCL as I have been on both cruiselines.
Please let me know what other info you would like :)

Re: Bermuda! Who has been??
DH and I went there on our HM and loved it! He had also been ther with his family on a cruise and his parents have been back twice since their family cruise.
Definitely check out the Navy/Dockyard, see downtown Hamilton and the beaches in St. George and St. Katherine. Our fav restaurant in Hamilton was the Hog & Penny. I know you have food on the cruise, but check it out if you can. You can see Fort Hamilton, go to the aquarium (which we didn't get to do) or the crystal caves (which was really neat!).
take a picture in a moongate if you can. It's good luck for lovers anyway! and go snorkling if you can!!

Yes, with Kenneth - being that this is his first trip after being injured and being that he does have a Traumatic Brain Injury and anything could happen, God forbid, we just worry about being gone for more than 5 days. Maybe next year we can step it up to seven -- but this year we are going to do the 5 which worked out better anyway. Normally we would want seven but b/c of Ken five is OK. You know, I saw that Celebrity has a seven day as well. I've heard nice things about them but again for this year, a little shorter is better.
I'm sure he'll do very well though - he's so psyched about going.
And how you feel about NCL vs. RCCL is the general feeling on TripAdvisor as well. My parents have been on both and said the same thing you said -- and my mom really enjoyed RCCL food. Thanks!!!

The awesome thing about the cruise is how handicapped accessible everything is -- Kenneth won't be in the wheelchair for long but for now, he is so we are happy that we don't have to worry about that with the ship.

Re: Bermuda! Who has been??
My husband is a t1 para. we just got back from cruise to bermuda. we have cruised alot always out of ny. we took celebrity a few times. they are out of NJ now they only have 4 wheelchair cabins, but very nice cabins.
Took carnival to Canada twice nice short trip but cabins for wheelchairs very small and all inside. also difficult ship to navigate the decks don't go all the way thru so sometimes you had to go to one deck go foward to get an elevator to the deck you want
Just got off NCL dawn. had a beautiful room with balcony, roll in shower and plenty of room to move around. ship was fairly easy to navigate, except for the heavy carpet in the halls had to push on, but doable. One area not accessible on deck 13, they had a great kid pool section in the back off the gym but dh could only get so far in to see the kids play but still not bad.
One advice book early if you need handicap cabin the ships usually only have a few and they fill up fast.
Feel free to ask any question dh was police officer also, lod 15 years ago.

TY for all of the info!! Especially about the boats, rooms, and hand. accomodations. My parents went on Princess before and this was when my brother was at Kessler (they had booked it before he was hurt so had to go). We stayed with Kenneth. Anywho, they went on and checked out the ship knowing, at that point, that he was going to be in a wheelchair for at least a while. She said that particular ship was SO great - everything was easy to access and a wheelchair's dream.
Now, they didn't have anything going out of NY in August except to New England and that is a cruise my nephew, mom, dad, and sister just did about a year ago. And we wanted beach destination with just one port for Ken this time - since it is his first trip. And we have a special beach wheelchair and he can float in the water with us without any assistance at all (he has done so in aqua therapy) so we are psyched about that.
So, since Princess didn't have the cruise we needed we booked with RCCL - but I'm so glad you told me about Celebrity, that there were so few rooms because that was our second choice. It meant going for seven days which we were worried about b/c we are nervous nellies - he'll be fine but ya know! So, we did RCCL instead and I just booked last night - you are SO RIGHT about the handicap rooms getting taken first.
We were able to get one! It took a lot of work on the booking agent's part. It is an inside room unfortunately there were no balcony rooms left -- but it does have a big window and a good amount of square footage with wide doorways and wheel-in showers which he doesn't even have at home so that's great! We are going to bring a shower seat and he'll be good to go.
We all got balcony regular rooms on the same deck -- I'm sad that he didn't get the balcony to be honest b/c it is his trip but he didn't care and we did figure out that he can come in any of our rooms to enjoy our balcony b/c the regular door into the room can fit his wheelchair -- it's just the bathroom doors. So, I think it'll work out.
We are so excited.
I think the main problem is that a lot of the ships don't require any type of disabiity verification. And since those rooms don't cost any more but are double in size a lot of people will just say "I'm disabled" to get a larger room which is sick but so many people do it! That is why they book up so fast because this ship did have at least a dozen of them and there was just one left. It's a shame they don't have more.
Your DH was injured on the job?
God Bless him - thank you for your help!

Re: Bermuda! Who has been??
yes he was NYPD shot 15 years ago.
Yes getting around being handicapped is tough. They do have handicap taxis in bermuda. First time we got stuck at the beach for hours waiting for one to come back and get us. this time I just went with the kids he stayed back. The ferry is easily accessible but don't think Hamilton is all that to see a lot of shops. Hard to navigate. St Gorges is a beautiful quaint town but alot of hills. Horseshoe bay is popular beach, but if you go by bus it is a long down hill walk they drop you on the road and you have to walk back up and down. taxis will take you right to the bottom.
Cruises are great and they have come a long way, but dh could get out on the balcony anyway they have ramps on the inside and outside but not easy to navigate
you have the empire pass for state beaches and parks?
