Tipping on cruises?
I am leaving this weekend. I am trying to figure out how much cash to bring.
When you buy a drink from a bar on the boat do you need cash then? Or does it get put on your credit card? Do you need to tip them in cash?

Re: Tipping on cruises?
I forgot what line you are going on, but on Royal or Celebrity at the bars they automatically add on 15 percent tip. If you tip them over and above the normal they will treat you a little better. Try to stick to the same bars and pick a favorite waiter/bartender and they'll hook you up.
Those lines are also cashless. At the beginning of the trip you either deposit cash at the pursers desk or hook up a credit card to a shipboard 'credit card' and you just keep on charging and at the end they will charge your credit card the full amount. On the ship I don't even bother carrying any cash. Extra tips can be written onto the slip you sign when you authorize it to be added to your shipboard account.
As for the tips for waiters, head waters, room attendants, etc we also have this added to the shipboard account. It's just easier than having to worry about having cash and limits the amount you need to carry. (We only take what we will need in port.) You can also tip for these particular things in cash if you like.

When you buy a drink at the bar they automatically add 15% to the total and it's billed to your sign & sail card. When I cruise the only cash I bring is for when I'm off the ship (in port) or in the casino. The tips for your room steward, waiter, etc. are automatically billed to your sign and sail card. I believe its like $10.50 per person per day. If you want to give extra (which I've never done) you always have that option too.

Thank you both very much! I wasn't sure of what we would be needing.

We tip our waiter, steward etc, in cash at the end of the trip. The cruise line will give you guidelines on how much per person per day. (room attendant gets the most, headwaiter the least)
Our staff did an outstanding job on our last cruise and we tipped them well. And I do agree about tipping a bit more for drinks and stuff - you will get better service because you will be remembered. At dinner, there was a separate bar server, our drinks were waiting for us at the table when we sat down. Enjoy your cruise !

I know that both NCL and RC have a thing that can automatically bill you $10 a day (pp) which gets dispersed throughout the crew
