I always just used the cheap ones from bru that had a little stretch to them. I attached them tothe belt loops on their pants because they knew how to get them off their wrists Chat Icon

I don't plan on using it at all times but if I am walking with DS, I do not want him to run into the street. Of course if we are in a park or safe area, I will let him loose to run around. 14m DS just has no idea what is safe or not.

DH's biggest fear is for DS to run into the street. DH works at the hospital and sees the worst of what can happen in accidents.

I actually have nothing against them, as I have a very active little boy, and if I felt we went somewhere where his safety was a concern I would use one.

That being said, I do not think using one for walks around the neighborhood is appropriate. My son walks with my husband and knows that he must hold his hand. He knows to stop at streets and not step foot into it, without Daddy giving the ok. This is how they learn. If you keep him on a leash for walks around the block how will he ever learn what is ok?

I think it's really easy for people to say they just make their kid hold their hand when they walk..

Actually it's NOT easy to say, and I really didn't want to respond to begin with because I knew it would be a sensitive subject and I didn't want to turn it into that. But the OP asked and I responded.

My kid IS a runner, he HATES to have his hand held. And being 6 months pregnant, it IS impossible to keep up with him.
But unless he can follow MY rules and hold my hand, then we do not walk alone together. If DH is with us, he insists on the hand holding too, because we usually walk our dog together.

And yes, it does only take one tiny second for something to happen, but who keeps their child tethered to their body every second as well?

This is the same for us. I am NUTS about him holding my hand. I am super paranoid and if he doesn't hold my hand, he's not going for a walk. I will say, I do know that DH gives him a little bit more freedom when I'm not around, but he says he is right next to him at all times, just not always holding his hand. That even makes me nervous.

I'm sorry, and PLEASE don't take this the wrong way, but the way you are talking about your child is the way I refer to my pup....Chat Icon

When DS and I are just walking down the block, he has learned that he MUST hold my hand or we do not walk. I usually like to keep him in his stroller or let him push a toy, but I am right there on top of him and he is my main focus.

For an amusement park or very crowded area, I might even consider those wrist tethers that someone else posted, but for everday use, for me, it is not an option.

And yes, accidents can happen anytime, leash or no leash.

I agree. It was MY way or he was carried.

ita! i feel that parents need to teach their dc to hold hands but yes in some cases (child w/ special needs, busy places, multiple children, etc.) then it is a good tool. but the op was talking about walking her ds around the neighborhood and to me that is not a time when it is necessary even with a difficult child, that is a learning time.

I had the monkey back pack for DS when he was younger. I tried using it once at the zoo, and he pulled on it like a wild dog. Chat Icon He would literally pull until he was hanging and I was holding his entire body weight. Needless to say, the harness was retired. Chat Icon But I would have gladly continued using it if it worked well for him.

OMG you described my exact experience and it was with the monkey back pack too except we were at adventureland I believe!Chat Icon

I just don't see why you would need a leash when the child could be right at your side holding your hand. Also if you are walking and a car or something does swerve or come your way, you have more of a chance of getting yourself and your child out of the way if they are at arms lenght and not at leash length.

My child doesn't like to hold hands - and she likes to run. There have been many a time when we are someplace local and I have to pick her up kicking and screaming b/c she is refusing to hold hands and trying to take off.

When she is attached with the wrist strap I posted on the other thread she will hold hands 80% of the time - which is a far cry better than the 30% without it.

I tried to just post which one I had and stay out of the drama, but why do people think its up to them to say its wrong? Wether the OP is going for a walk around the neighborhood or going to a special event at a crowded place, can it really HURT to use it?

I kept one attached to my wrist all the time and the other end to dd's belt buckle, WHILE holding her hand. If she quickly let go and took off, I was covered. HOW IS THAT BAD? Because it looks silly or she looked like a dog?

I say this everytime one of these threads come up: I care enough to put my dog on a leash, why would I not do the same for my child?

Thank you! I wonder the same thing myself. Why do we leash our dogs, because we think they're worthless and beneath us or is it because we actually care about their safety and the safety of others? What's wrong with the same thought process for children?Chat Icon

Re: Why do ppl think a toddler leash is so wrong? Can you recommend yours?

i'm against it just becaue i remember when they first came out (or rather, when i first say them, aka high school) i remember thinking how horrible it looked, how it resembled parents walking a dog. i hated how it looked and i vowed never to use it.

if you know my DD you know she needs one more than anything in the world. she DOES.NOT.STOP. EVERRRRRR! yet, putting her on a backpack leash, no matter how much it downplays the fact that she's on a leash is not an option for me. it just looks so offensive. i chase after her and i deal with it the hard way. that's what i signed up for isn't it? They continue to make them so plenty of parents are buying them. If you want to use one, you have to not care what people think or say. It's just the nature of this product. I never really considered one either way bc my kids were always good stroller sitters. A stroller could also be considered lazy, no? I loved that they would not protest, it made my running around all the easier - I rode my double stroller into the ground with my 3. My DH would probably have protested the toddler leash. I don't bat an eyelash when I see someone using one but that's me.

Anway, if you want one and it will make your life easier, get one. Kids are going to learn how to eventually not run away so you're not doing anything that will confuse their freedom limits long-term.

This is the part I don't get.
NO ONE on here said they think they're WRONG....
NO ONE said that anyone who uses one is a bad parent.
NO ONE said that any child that is on a leash is out of control.
And NO ONE said that they are INHUMANE

A question was asked by th OP "Why do ppl think a toddler leash is so wrong?" and those who thought so answered.
Those who WANTED to become offended, and who WANTED to defend thier use of them also answered, also making assumptions and reading more into the "against" replies than was really there, IMHO, simply to cause drama and a now 3 page thread.

If you knew you used them and you knew you would be offended at the replies of those against them, why did you even open this thread?
THAT is what caused all the drama.

So let's not read more into what is simply someone's opinion. Did any of the "against" mothers here attack the "for" mothers? No, they didn't. Simply because everyone is entitled to their opinion, whether YOU like it or not.

Let's play nice, leash or no leash, OK?

I'm not a big fan of the leash for a few reasons, and they are MY reasons and not to be taken as me generalizing everyone. I can understand and appreciate the use of them as well, as I have a VERY active 2 1/2 year old.

For ME, I think they give parents a false sense of security instead of being alert at all times to watch your child. What happens when your child isn't on the leash?

For ME, my dog belongs on a leash, not my child.

Twins would just give me a heart attack though, I don't know how anyone can venture out of their house with 2 year old twins and not have a nervous breakdown. I nearly died with my son and my nephew who are 6 months apart.

I see both sides of it. As a Mom of twins there is NO way to keep a toddler who is walking with you and it is sinmply not safe for them. I always always keep my kids in their stroller or a shopping cart. They will stay there until I can trust them to listen to me all the time when we are out, OR I have someone else with me. I would never rule out the use of leashes.

I agree with Diana. I have nothing against them, but I wouldn't use it for walks IMO. Just like Diana's DS, we felt it was imperitive to teach DS the "rules of the road". My parents live in the city and DS RUNS the blocks with my sister or dad, but knows to stop at the curb. I could see Disney/Sesame/someplace very crowded.

Last year we flew to Florida and didn't feel like lugging our stroller for JUST the traveling part. DS was 27 months and we were both so surprised at how much he liked walking with us and holding our hands. I think it made him feel grown upChat Icon

Exactly. The OP asked why people thought they were wrong, so people are telling her. Or telling her why they think it works..

Like I posted on the other thread, I JUST received a monkey backpack thingy as a gift and this thread could have been started by me. I was the anti-leash, stop walking your kid like a dog person....BEFORE I had kids. Now that I have a 7 month old, I have no idea what I will do when he is old enough to walk (and not old enough to know the consequences of running in the street). I say YOU know your child best. If a monkey backpack is going to keep your child safe, then DO it. Eff the judgmental looks or thoughtsChat Icon

Okay, I am determined to make this a 4 page post!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Actually, I wanted to post about this the other day and did not get the chance. Before I had a child, I thought these looked so weird, didn't care for them at all. Fast forward to my becoming the Mom of a runner, and I no longer think anything is wrong with them. If I had more than one child, I probably would have bought one.

DS did get that he shouldn't run away from me fairly quickly. I tried saying no very sternly, but that just didn't cut it. If we were going for a walk and he refused to hold my hand, we went home. I always presented it like a choice, you can hold my hand or we go home. So if he didn't want to, we went straight home. I think I only needed to do that twice before he got it. As for parking lots, he ran away from me in them a couple times (this after numerous warnings and reminders to stay with Mommy). The second time, I screamed at him. Really screamed. I'm not a yeller, so he instantly got it. When we both calmed down, I explained why I got so mad and he has never since run from me in a lot or tugged his hand away. Sometimes he even wants to be carried, but that's fine with me. As long as he knows to be careful.

I don't care....if I wanted to use one I'd use it and tell others to shut it

I don't plan on using one, but I'd put my DD's safety first over what others think
