Why do ppl think a toddler leash is so wrong? Can you recommend yours?

Now that DS is mobile and running around, we need a toddler leash. I don't want him to run into the street. 14m old DS has no concept of safety yet.

Can you recommend your toddler leash?

I don't know why certain people are against toddler leashes. Chat Icon

Re: Why do ppl think a toddler leash is so wrong? Can you recommend yours?

I'm not against it but here's what I've heard...

Watch your child, not leash your child. If you weren't so distracted with your own life, you wouldnt have to put a leash on your child. They should be your only responsibility. Leashing a child seems cruel to them, they need to run free and be independent. What about others around you, that leash only extends an annoying cord between you and your child that the rest of us have to watch out for. You think that leash will keep them from walking in front of a car in a parking lot?

If you can't tell... I have suggested getting a leash and of course people have provided their input. Chat Icon

Oh ETA My favortive - Leashes are for Lazies!

Sometimes it looks like people are walking their kids as if they were a dog.

I think that is the root of most of the backlash

Re: Why do ppl think a toddler leash is so wrong? Can you recommend yours?

I'm not a big fan of the leash for a few reasons, and they are MY reasons and not to be taken as me generalizing everyone. I can understand and appreciate the use of them as well, as I have a VERY active 2 1/2 year old.

For ME, I think they give parents a false sense of security instead of being alert at all times to watch your child. What happens when your child isn't on the leash?

For ME, my dog belongs on a leash, not my child.

Twins would just give me a heart attack though, I don't know how anyone can venture out of their house with 2 year old twins and not have a nervous breakdown. I nearly died with my son and my nephew who are 6 months apart.

I don't plan on using it at all times but if I am walking with DS, I do not want him to run into the street. Of course if we are in a park or safe area, I will let him loose to run around. 14m DS just has no idea what is safe or not.

DH's biggest fear is for DS to run into the street. DH works at the hospital and sees the worst of what can happen in accidents.

Re: Why do ppl think a toddler leash is so wrong? Can you recommend yours?

I can see both sides of it.

When we went to Disney, I had my then 2 year old on a "leash" because he was a runner, and had no fear, and I was scared to death of losing him there.

However, there is a woman who lives around the block from me. She has one DD who is 14 months old. We live in a VERY quiet neighborhood, no fast cars, barely any traffic in fact, and every day she takes her daughter for a walk. Its just the 2 of them, and she leashes her. Its like watching someone walk their dog.

So in certain situations, I totally understand why people use them, however, to me, one adult, and one child, you can hold hands, or walk really close.

LOL I just bought the Lion Backpack Harness from one step ahead this morning. My nanny is not as fast as my 16 month old.

I'm sorry, and PLEASE don't take this the wrong way, but the way you are talking about your child is the way I refer to my pup....Chat Icon

When DS and I are just walking down the block, he has learned that he MUST hold my hand or we do not walk. I usually like to keep him in his stroller or let him push a toy, but I am right there on top of him and he is my main focus.

For an amusement park or very crowded area, I might even consider those wrist tethers that someone else posted, but for everday use, for me, it is not an option.

And yes, accidents can happen anytime, leash or no leash.

I'm not against them but I think I would only consider using one in busy locales like an amusement park or an airport.

I would always watch my kid like a hawk anyway but those places scare me and any added security is good in my eyes.

I couldn't see myself using them every day for walks though.

I dont care what others think. I can be watching my child and it could take 2 seconds for a psycho perv to scoop her up and run. Being 5 months PG at my age, I cant run after her so if a leash keeps her from being swiped, a leash it is. Id love someone to tell me to my face that my kid looks like a dog.

Ha...I'm with you. Whenever I hear this argument I feel like asking, "Do you have playpen/pack and play? Kinda looks like an animal cage, no?" Chat Icon

I have never had one of these, but I have absolutely no problem with others using them and I disagree about the dog leash thing anyway. Better to be safe than sorry. I think they're great for a place like Sesame, etc. And I think the backpack ones look cute.

I do not plan on buying one in the future, but never say never, KWIM? Chat Icon

Its easy for people who's children arent runners to not understand and to judge. Its not a matter of watching your child, but it only takes ONE second to turn away and your child could be gone.

ETA: I have a runner. And I would prefer the wrist tether over the backpack thing.

Re: Why do ppl think a toddler leash is so wrong? Can you recommend yours?

I think it's really easy for people to say they just make their kid hold their hand when they walk. Not every child allows it. Thankfully, my almost 3 year old has always been a good hand holder. BUT I can already see my younger DD is really resistant as she wants to go go go.

For long walks I cannot imagine how uncomfortable it would be for a small child to be forced to have their hand/arm held up for long periods of time. That's when the tethers are especially helpful, I think.

Actually it's NOT easy to say, and I really didn't want to respond to begin with because I knew it would be a sensitive subject and I didn't want to turn it into that. But the OP asked and I responded.

My kid IS a runner, he HATES to have his hand held. And being 6 months pregnant, it IS impossible to keep up with him.
But unless he can follow MY rules and hold my hand, then we do not walk alone together. If DH is with us, he insists on the hand holding too, because we usually walk our dog together.

And yes, it does only take one tiny second for something to happen, but who keeps their child tethered to their body every second as well?

Really?Chat Icon I'm sure that a leash is likely going to be a deterrant and at least slow the perv down a bit. Plus the biofeedback a yanked leash provides is going to alert a parent that somethings amiss rather than just realizing junior has gone missing rather than been misplaced in the crowd (which can happen easily if a toddler runs loose......

Re: Why do ppl think a toddler leash is so wrong? Can you recommend yours?

Personally for me a leash is not an option. My older DD never had one and learned early on to hold on to my hand if we are walking somewhere. And for my DD who is now 11 months old and walking pretty well. She is walking next to me and I am holding onto her hand. Unless we're at a playground, she will always be holding my hand as I know the dangers that cars and accidents can cause.

I just don't see why you would need a leash when the child could be right at your side holding your hand. Also if you are walking and a car or something does swerve or come your way, you have more of a chance of getting yourself and your child out of the way if they are at arms lenght and not at leash length.

While this is my opinion and the way that i choose to raise my kids i would never knock someone for using a leash, since in reality it is better than the parents who just let their kids run wild. So atleast you are taking some control over them.

How nice for you that you have a DH at home to walk with you so you don't have to walk alone. I don't because my DH works an opposite schedule as me. So, at 7 months pregnant it is me, my 3 year old, and my 18 month old. I refuse to be kept indoors because other's might think I'm inhumane for tethering my younger child when we are going for longer walks in crowded places..

My point is: unless you are in MY shoes, you can keep your comments inside your head when you see me.Chat Icon

ITA!!!
DD just started walking and honestly, once she starts running I'd feel more comfortable going to a sesame or somewhere like that with a leash...yes, obviously I will teach her to hold my hand, but I'm sorry a child seeing Elmo, or something that really captures their attention, all goes out the window..I've seen it too many times...as well as a child is taught to hold your hand, there are instances that accidents will happen, and I'd rather not have an accident occur in a crowded crazy environment than not..While I do agree "leashing" a child on a quiet street is not something I would probably do....

Honestly, the sarcasm isn't necessary.
A question was asked, an OPINION was asked FOR, and I provided. I never said you were INHUMANE (and don't appreciate the assumption).

And NO, it isn't NICE that I have a DH that I get to go on walks with....that happens about once or twice a month. So please, do not put YOURSELF in MY shoes. You have absolutely no clue what goes on in my home or how I choose to handle myself or the timeline of the walks I take with my child.

I do not make comments to anyone I see doing ANYTHING I don't agree with...unless I am ASKED, as I was in this instance. So when I see you walking your children I will still smile and say hello. Chat Icon

And for the record, I DID state that I would consider an option for a crowded place.

i know this is one of "those" topics but lets try not to make it a 4 pager.

i think if u feel comfortable with the leash then use it as a back up but while you are walking try too teach him to hold hands bc he will get used to the freedom of walking and when he must hold your hand he may be more resistant.

i was strict with hand holding and my 3 yr old still must hold someones hand at all times. he hated it when he was 1 but then he was either picked up or put in a stroller. if he wanted to walk then he held my hand. is it comfortable for a kid to hold hands for a long time? probably not but they'll get used to it and you can pick them up when they get tired.

All kids are different. Some willingly hold hands while others do everything possible to get free and run. For those who have runners, the leash can be really helpful, especially in crowded places.

I plan on taking one with us when we go to Disneyland, the San Diego Zoo, etc. I hope I don't have to use it, but I know DS will try everything possible to not hold our hands. I don't want to keep him in a stroller all day, but I also want him to be safe when he's walking in a crowded place.

we never used one--but very early on I made the rule "Hold Hands in Street"---we consistently said it and my 3 yr old says it now and WILL NOT run in the street

my 14 month old---another story all together

It is scary walking down Brooklyn streets with them

Same here!

We use the doggy backpack one on occasion. I have twins in a stroller and a 3 yr old.. i only have 2 hands. this is a life saver for keeping my kid safe.

I really don't care what anyone says about it, but the comments are annoying and I HAVE gotten them. I get sooooo many " looks" when Noahs wearing his, and while I dont care, I just wish someone would say something to me, so I could give them all 3 children and tell them " you try it"!

What I don't like about the criticism is the underlying " you shoudl teach your child to hold hands instead". As if those who use it are taking the "easy", " lazy" way out. That annoys me.
