Aruba

DH and I like to explore different beaches and such while we're on an island and instead of taking cabs, we were thinking of renting a car. We went to St. Maarten last year and didn't rent a car and once we got there we realized we should have. Would you recommend renting a car in Aruba? Why or why not?

They weren't that expensive in St. Maarten either but it was cheaper to rent a car than it was to take cabs. So that's where I'm coming from. Are the car rentals there really expensive or is it the same as taking cabs or is it cheaper? We're not ones to stay on the resort the whole trip.

Re: Aruba

Eh, I don't think you need to..it's a tiny island. The entire hotel area, where most stuff leaves from, is connected by a boardwalk. I guess if you really wanted to, you could rent a car, but most of the stuff is concentrated in one area, from what I remember, with the exception of Baby Beach and the Natural Bridge.

We rented a car through Alamo (and got a discount for being a Costco member). It was worth it for us - we stayed at a timeshare so we went to the supermarket a few times and drove to a couple of beaches to snorkel.

It was about $150-$200 a week.

Re: Aruba

We just came back from Aruba and we weren't originally going to rent a car but decided to. We paid $200 for the whole week. The place we rented from brought us back to the airport (that was included in the rental price).

I would definitely do it. There are some nice restaurants that are a distance away and would be cheaper overall to rent the car as opposed to cabs. We stayed at a timeshare too so for us it was great because we went food shopping. We also had our children with us

FYI - We went to Flying Fishbones (highly recommend)

Re: Aruba

I think it is a really good idea to rent a car. Get 4WD one day so you can do the part by the Natural Bridge.

DH and I rented a car for two (maybe it was 3?) days, a 4WD one day and a regular car the other. We got it from our hotel, but I don't remember how much it was. It wasn't too much.

We loved it! We spent two days snorkelling the island. We went north one day up to the light house and stopped where ever to snorkel. Then one day we went down to Baby Beach and then went to Natural Bridge.

I love Aruba!

We did a cruise that brought us to Aruba and we did a tour in a jeep that brought us to all the "spots". Thanks for the reminder! We will definitely do this!

Re: Aruba

Def rent a car!!!! it is so cheap to rent one and so worth it....

we went all over the island and didn't have to worry about taking cabs...some of the best restaurants are driving distance from Palm beach and also the best beach (Eagle beach) is few minutes aways from the hotel zone so you need a car or taxi to get there....

Re: Aruba

DH and I love love love Aruba. We pretty much go there once a year now. No need to rent a car in Aruba. The island is 20 miles long. The bus is about $3 round trip downtown and sometimes there's a taxi guy that takes you downtown for the same price as the bus. The bus also drives past most of the beaches where you can also stop All of the tours include transportation so you won't need a car for that.

The only thing you MAY want to get a car for is driving to go to dinner if its far from your hotel, other than that, there really is no need.

Re: Aruba

No it's a tiny island. Cabs were pretty cheap & you can walk all down the beach, finding endless things to do.
Gas is mucho $$$ there.
