What kind of swing set do you have?

We are looking for a swing set for DS that he can use for years to come.

Most of the wooden set kits have a 2x6 for the swing arm and DH is not happy with this. These sets do say they have a maximum weight per swing of 115lbs and age limit of 8. I agree with DH that we shouldn't have to buy a new set at 8 years old ( my SS is almost 14 and 70lbs, granted he is WAY small for his age because of medical reasons, but I honestly have no idea how old a normal child is at 115 lbs).

Apparently the ideal swing beam is a 14' 4x8. We aren't finding any like that, when you get up closer to $2K they have a 4x6 swing arm , which he is OK with, but I don't want to spend that much. Now he is thinking about building it himself, but I don't see how he has time for that. I guess I am wondering if the 2x6 is a big deal?

So I am have few questions about the sets

So what kind of set do you have?

How long have you had it?

How is it holding up?

How old and how big are the children that play on it?

Thanks so much!

Re: What kind of swing set do you have?

We don't have a set yet, but our plan is to buy one of the inexpensive sets this summer for DS (he will be 1 year this summer) and keep that for a couple of years. At 3 or 4, we plan on buying a quality set for around $2K.
I think the full size sets are too big for a baby or even 2 year old and don't really see the point in spending the $$$ on a little tikes or step 2 set when they are only going to use it for a couple years. The metal sets are fine for 2/3 years and are not too big for small children.

In your case, I do understand that your SS may be using the set too and in that case I would probably just spend the $$$ on a large, quality set and buy a toddler swing for it and maybe get a small little tikes type slide seperately.

Re: What kind of swing set do you have?

Thanks for the reply. My SS will be using the set too. he is really young for his age, so I would expect him to use it for a few years as well.

Maybe I'm just having sticker shock. I have been paying attention when I drive around and I do see a lot of the sets out there with the 2x6's, so I was thinking maybe they are fine. Although a few were reinforced with random boards and many of them looked pretty weathered Chat Icon

I did find this "backyard" set for $40K ...maybe $2K isn't that much after all

We ordered it from Wood Kingdon - from what i researched they are the only company that sells PVC sets on LI.....

I will post pics soon - They are there today installing it - it comes from PA and the Amish built it and they do the installation....

Re: What kind of swing set do you have?

We have been researching this extensively (b/c that's what my DH does LOL) and narrowed it down to sets from Rainbow and WoodPlay. The sets we are considering are in the $3500 range.

That said, DD turns 2 in June...so we're actually going to put it off for now. The sets are just too big for my comfort zone with her...so we'll purchase in either the Fall or next Spring.

I having been leaning towards on of their sets, which one did you get?

I really like the style of the Playaround ones, I like how they look like log cabins or the revolutionary war forts up north.

I really like this one

Thank you everyone for the responses. I think I was having sticker shock, I was thinking under $1k for a swing set, but if we want one for both kids that will last a through childhood that doesn't really seem to make sense.

I took a look at the Amish PVC ones - they look pretty sturdy too, it is great to have options! If anyone else has any rec's I'd love to see them!

Thanks so much for the help!!!
