oatmeal or rice for the first food--which should I choose?

Just curious. I haven't made the decision to give this a go yet, so I am trying to educate myself here

I did oatmeal first, then added rice second(I kept the oatmeal while i did the rice b/c of the rice causing constipation)...I fed her twice a day then.

Re: oatmeal or rice for the first food--which should I choose?

Rice is usually first since it is the least allergenic

BUT i switched to oatmeal after he had rice for 3 days

FYI--i would wait a bit for the solids--like at least 5 1/2 months :)

I did oatmeal because rice can constipate.

I'm not sure about which to start... but since you mentioned trying to make your decision, I'll just add somethings we spoke about with my ped and why we decided to wait...

-baby needs to be able to sit up
-baby needs to lose tongue-thrust
-baby's intestines need to mature
-baby should show interest in food

more info here

Also, since I"m BFing... the ped. said that it's best for the baby to just have breastmilk for the first 6 months of life to really get all of those BM benefits. If we were FF, my feelings might be a little diff... KWIM?

We did oatmeal because I heard so many things about rice being so binding. We actually never did rice.

Re: oatmeal or rice for the first food--which should I choose?

I did very thinned out rice to avoid constipation (just mixed with bm or formual whichever you use)

I also introduced water when I introduced cereal (1 ox twice a day as per my ped)

I had him on rice exclusively for about a month, then we moved on to oatmeal.

soon after, we started with other foods.

I have read though that cereal does NOT have to be your child's first food...avocado is a good first food too.

Re: oatmeal or rice for the first food--which should I choose?

so you all waiting until they were 6mos old?

Pedi said it was my decision and that nutritionally speaking there was no value add to start doing this now (he is 4mos) but that if he is staring at us eat, he is developmentally ready.

I personally want to wait bc my nanny would be the one to introduce this (doc said to feed him food once a day an hour after his first baba--so 9am in my house). I want this to be something special between he and I and right now I am too crazy at work

there is NO WAY i would have made it to six months. I made it til 17 weeks...
but he was CLEARLY interested in food. and he is a great eater (meaning his technique, no tongue thrust, opens wide etc)

I introduced on the weekend. so I did it first.

and he wakes up early (7:30) so I usually feed him around 8-8:30 and either I or dh does that first feeding.

right now our plan is to wait... but we'll see based on his development - KWIM?

If he shows interest, stops the tongue-thrust... we'll talk to the ped. again.

We started at 4 months, with rice, and has definitly not been constipated....we'll try oatmeal now, and he is also having fruits. DS has been staring at us eat, and smacking his lips together for over a month now...

When I put the spoon in front of his mouth, he opened so wide, it was like he had had food his whole life...

BTW...My ped suggested I do it in the am, too, and I asked him why, he told me it was so that IF he had a reaction I would be there to see it....I explained that I work FT, and would rather start with dinner for him ,and be home with him through the night, and he said to feed when I wanted to then...

I did oatmeal. I tried rice first...DS HATED it and it bound him up like no other and he was in pain, so I decided to skip rice.

Lily had issues with gas as an infant. They were pretty much gone by the time she was ready to eat, but we started with oatmeal and skipped rice....just to be safe.
