If you win on a scratch lotto ticket someone gave you
Say someone sends you a birthday card and throws a scratcher or two in there. If you win on the ticket do you give that person back half the winnings? I'd never heard of this but someone I know is insisting everyone does it.

I mean, if it was win for life and I won for life, maybe I'd do something...but if I won $20 I'd use it toward a real present

Um..well I'm with you, never heard of giving them back half the winnings.
That would say the person gave you a gift and EXPECTED something back from it. When the heck is that okay?!
No, if you give me a card and I win $10 bucks, I'm not giving you back $5. That seems so petty to me.
Now if I won the jackpot and - I'm sure I'd take that person out to dinner or something and thank them. But not because I HAVE to or SHOULD but because I WANT to.

Depends on the amount and who gave it to me. Then again, if it was for a large amount I don't necessarily have to tell them I won anything. Except DW, because she knows all and sees all.

I thought so! This person won less than $20 and I'm going to be seeing the person who gave them the ticket so they insist I pass along their half of the winnings. I feel so stupid.
Obviously I'd do something if I ever won anything big. The biggest amount I ever won was about $100 in an office Super Bowl pool and I brought in bagels for everyone.

i read this yesterday. last night i got 5 lotto tickets from a friend for my bday. i asked her if i won did she expect me to split the winnings--she said no. no one at the table heard of this either. i didnt win

no, unless it was like a ridickulous amount then i would def either give the person who gave me the strach offs some money, or buy them a present.
example of why i would not, i gave my girlfriend $ when we went to AC to play the table, and she won... i never expected her to give me any of her winnings!

That's crazy! Does the birthday person know she is expected to give back half of her birthday gift? I wouldn't want any part of that and would tell the person who gave the ticket to get the money herself.
