Car seat placement
Are you putting the car seat behind you or the passengers seat?

My sons is in the middle, but we have had it on the sides occasionally and I prefer the passenger side over the driver's side. Its much easier to see him while I'm driving.
Some cars can't do the middle (check your manual)!

Our car has the car seat hooks and they are behind the driver & passenger so we can do either.

think of it this way, if you have to put the infant seat on a side ... do you want to take the baby out of the car into traffic? also, it would be easier to reach the baby if it were on the passenger side (or, sort of reach, from the driver seat).
we went with passenger side

In order of "safety"
Wherever your car manual says (some cars can't have it in the middle, and if they say not to use the middle, then it isn't safe)
Middle (gives crush zone on either side)
Passenger side - You put DC in and take them out away from traffic (even if you don't normally park on the street, you're bound to go to a house party with only street parking, yard sale, fair, etc at some point).
Also, statistically, the rear passenger corner is the least often hit in collisions.

What year? I have a CR-V and DD's seat is in the middle. The car seat inspection station installed it there. (I have a 2007, with LATCH)
I asked about car seat placement when DC #2 is born and they said, DD (who will be 18 months) will go behind drivers side and the newborn on the passenger side.

DD's infant seat was in the middle. Now her convertible seat is on the passenger side.
DS's infant seat will be on the drivers side... process of elimination. lol
Definitely check your cars manual. It will tell you where the safest place is in YOUR car.

We have ours in the middle. My manual didn't say where to put it, but we have the latch on both sides and in the middle. We have a 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Yes, safest place is in the middle (the rule of thumb is "least protected passenger in the middle"), if your vehicle can accommodate it. In some vehicles you may have a hump in the middle or a fold down arm rest that makes it unusable for car seat purposes.
If you don't have LATCH in the middle you can still install it with a seatbelt if there is one there. There should be no more than 1" of movement at the belt path.
Check your manual before "borrowing" lower anchors from the sides, this isn't always allowed.
We had DD's infant seat in the center but she is now 2 and in a convertible and on the passenger side in both vehicles. In our SUV, we will probably put #2's seat in the middle again because it is big enough to have 3 car seats in, and in our sedan we will have to see how the seats fit. We may have to put DD on the drivers side and #2 behind the passenger.

we had ours installed at the hospital, my car is a chevy eqinox and i have the latch system in the middle. Also my dh truck didnt have it in the middle and the seatbelts didnt lock at a certain point so we put it in the passanger back seat with the latch.

We have ours on the passenger side. The middle isn't the safest as per our owners manual and we have to move up the seat to accomodate it so we can't put it on the drivers side.
