How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?

Are you supposed to try and hide your belly? Mask it? or show it off?

I feel so self-conscious.

I bought some maternity t-shirts that show everything and I feel like I shouldn't be wearing it like that.

You ever see a person at work or on the street that wears something that is not flattering for their body type? I feel like that's me right now.

I don't know what else to do with this warm weather.

i think it depends on each woman...i like to wear both loose and fitted tops...just depends on my mood. You should dress how ever you feel comfortable! Chat Icon

It definitely depends. I only like tops that flow away from the belly. Nothing I own is tight over the belly. But some girls looks really cute in those tops that go back in underneath!

I think it depends on the woman.

I'm a bit self concious about my body to begin with. So I've been buying loser, flowy tops instead of fitted ones.

Maybe once the summer is here & my belly has popped fully & I actually look a bit more pregnant I'll be more comfortable to wear a fitted top that defines the belly.

Right now I still feel like I look fat when I look in the mirror, not as much since I'm showing alot more but still uncomfortable walking around showing it off.

Re: How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?

I think it depends on your body type, comfort level, and pre-preg style! I prefer the more fitted tops...not tight, but fitted. I think they look much better on me than the flowy tops. Most of my regular clothes are also fitted, so I'm comfortable in the same style in maternity. I'm petite and look lost in some of the flowy shirts

Re: How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?

I feel like they all fit like sh!t!
But then I realize that I just feel my body looks like sh!t right now.

As much as I try and want to hide any sign that I'm pregnant- I don't like the tops that are too loose- because they look like circus tents IMO.
I tend to pull them tight at the back and fantasize about clipping them like so they will be more fitted.

But then when I try on something more fitted that hugs the belly I hate it. I feel like I dont' look preggo- just FAT.
I know that's not true, but that is how I feel. Any belly on me automatically illicits a reaction in my psyche of- "you ate too much, you lazy slob!"

And even though I'm almost 7 months preggo I feel like when I'm out in public people don't look at me and say- oh she's pregnant. Because I don't have the big, obvious preggo belly. So I feel like they think- wow that girl has a GUT!

So either way- fitted or loose- I'm not happy.
I tend to walk around with my big purse in front of me- covering up the stomach. Or I find myself holding my hands in front of my belly when I walk the halls at work.

I want to crawl under the cover until I give birth and get my body and my wardrobe back. I don't want to even be seen in public!

Re: How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?

I just went maternity clothes shopping for the 1st time last week and I tried on lots of different tops: loose and tight.

I hated the loose tops because they were juts laying there, loike on a hanger... they had no cut or shape at all.

I tried on a tank top which was kind of fitted and I liked it much better!

Re: How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?

Like others said...it's whatever you are comfortable in. On the weekends I def wear more fitted shirts b/c I truly love my big ole belly! For work I'll wear more flowy shirts which (although they make me look bigger than I am) just seem more appropriate for my office.

Indeed; and you can only hide it for so long! People will be able to clearly see that you are pregnant soon so why bother trying to mask or hide it. If loose tops make you comfortable, go for it. You'll know when maybe its time to retire a top until next season lol

Same here. I think flowy tops right now make me look like a tent. I try to buy more fitted tops.

Re: How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?

In the beginning i liked the bigger baggier tops....but as me and my belly get bigger i'm going more towards the fitted tops, since the baggier ones are getting tight in the belly area now and are still loose and flowy everywhere else.

I'm still wearing non-maternity tops mixed in with long tank tops.

I feel like I look fat when I try on lots of items, but people at work seem to suddenly know (at 20 weeks) that I am pregnant now. They were just being polite before.

My point is: I feel fat... but I probably just look pregnant (and can't see it myself).

In the beginning I wore more flowy tops..but once I had a real bump I started wearing the tighter shirts. They just looked much more flattering on me.

I think it depends on how pregnant you are and how you feel.

In the beginning, I wore things that were flowy and didn't show off my belly. Now that I'm 22 weeks and have a belly, I don't mind wearing shirts that show it off.

Re: How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?

During the bloated stage I wore empire waist type shirts that flow a bit. Once I started showing, I wore more fitted shirts. I just feel huge in the flowy stuff.

Re: How are maternity clothes supposed to fit?

I have a few flowy tops, but mostly the shirts I wear are more fitted and show off the bump.

I have more of an issue with the pants, they all fit me like cr@p! The legs and butt always look baggy! It looked like Pea in a Pod had more fitted pants, but I dont want to spend tons of money on them, especially when I have less then 3 months to go.

Same issue here with the jeans. The reason I don't really wear ANYTHING that isnt long and flowing is b/c I want to really cover my butt not even my belly LOL I get saggy butt in everything!
