electric fireplace - yay or nay?
I wanted a fireplace in my living room but the house we're buying doesn't have one. I've heard mixed feelings on the electric fireplaces. What do you think of them?

It depends on the FP - what it looks like. I've seen some that I loooooove and some that I don't love.
My parents used to have one that hung on the wall and it rolled and had flame cut-outs so it cast "flame" shadows - it was so old school - I loved it my whole life (even as an obnoxious teen) and still love it even though it's long gone.
Go for it - they give off good heat and a nice ambiance. My gf got one from HD and hers is pretty nice - I think she paid $600.

My parents have a propane fireplace in their living room, I love it! Its not too expensive for the propane. The fire warms up the room and the mantle doesn't got hot (my mom keeps decorations and candles and stuff on it) but what I like best is that you can turn the flame off anytime you want.

Are they a fire hazard?
The only reason I ask is I was getting a new quote to change insurance co's for our home insurance and that was one of the questions that they asked- if we had an electric fire place

I personally don't love the electric fireplaces. I like the idea of fireplaces because they provide a sensory experience. Electric fireplaces have the visual appeal of the mantel.. but the sight of the fire is really the visual I am looking for and they lack 'real flames'. If you get the kind that has the actual flame in it I like it much better. I have a natural gas fireplace and even though it has real flames I wish I had a wood burning one to appeal to my auditory senses. And the scent of the wood is a big thing for me too. Electric fireplaces have none of that so unless they are really well made they get a 'eh..' from me.

I'm not a fan of the electric ones. I prefer the real deal. I have a wood stove that I love. I can leave the door open if i want the open-fireplace-feel.
