Tree removal

We had one company come by to give us an estimate for removing a large tree in our backyard (and grind the stump). They quoted us $1200. We thought that was a bit much and put calls out to other companies that people recommended on here. Well one came by today and left the estimate in the mailbox for $2500!!!!! Re: Tree removal

For one tree??? I paid $1400 last winter to have 9 trees taken down and ground.

Cornell Tree Experts Inc (631) 474-8084

I did haggle with him for the price, I compared him against T&M and he wanted my business, so he did it for what T&M was going to do it for.

Yes, one tree!!! In the estimate we got today the note said they might have to call the fence company to remove a portion to get the stump grinder in the back.

We're still waiting to hear from Cheap Charlies on when they can come and another company. This is crazy!

Re: Tree removal

Most of the time, the higher estimates are because they can't reach the tree with their heavy equipment so they have to do the whole thing manually. Which is more dangerous and labor intensive, hence more money.

Re: Tree removal

We just got 2 estimates to remove an oak tree, both came in around $1800. We removed a bunch of other pine and smaller trees for less. So I think it depends on the tree. I would get a few estimates.

To me it would make sense if they both came in close to each other but one was more than double! Insanity!

Re: Tree removal

when we had trees removed we used T&M Greencare. Their price was great, but then again we did it in Feb. '07 to save some $. Make sure the ground is good and dried out when they come...their stump grinder did a number on our back lawn b/c the ground was mushy.

Re: Tree removal

my landscaping cut down one (dead) tree this weekend as part of our spring clean up. he charged us an extra $20 to haul away the dead wood (pine)

he also cut down 2 dead trees last year and cut them down in to fire wood for us for around $250 I think.

I am not on LI but these prices are out of control!

Cheap Charlies tried price gouging us.
Right before the storm, they quoted us 575$ to take a tree down while they were working on another tree in my yard. I call them 2 weeks later to schedule it, and now the price is 800$! Nice business practices charlie...

Any business of this nature will give you a deal on an "add-on" if they are already at your house doing work. They don't have to travel to and from the location, they may be filling up a half-full truck or container, they may be paying guys for a set period of time, ie: full or half day and the extra tree fills in some gaps. If they are making a separate trip to take down just one tree I would expect it to be more than the "group rate" they previously quoted. I see it more as a quantity discount, not price gouging.
