What is your opinion on this?????

If your neighbors gutters were not working, meaning that the water is just pouring over the gutters, rolling down their property and pooling water into your foundation, causing your basement to start getting water leaking in... what would you say to them?

Do we have a right to tell them that they need to fix the issue because it is causing water problems for us in our house?

All of this rain is making us realize that the main reason we are getting water in our basement (besides the sheer volume of rain) is because of the neighbor's gutters not working and the pitch of their property is making all that water just roll into our foundation and pool there.

Just trying to figure out what we should say to them. Chat Icon

How is the relationship with your neighbors? They might not even realize and it can be an easy fix.

I would offer to help clear out their gutters or get a landscaper fix the pitch on your property.

That's the interesting part. We have lived here for 3 years and are friendly with them. It *was* a younger couple with a 10 year old son. We would say hi, but never became good friends.

Well, as of this past Saturday, the DH moved out of the house and they finalized their divorce. The wife is the one who is staying in the house and let's just say we always liked the husband better.

So now we have to have some sort of conversation with the woman who in all honesty, scares me a little!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I wouldn't say anything to the neighbors and just work out the pitch of the property to try to avoid this problem in the future. Maybe you can create a run off to divert the water.

Well, our house is slightly lower than their house, so the land naturally goes down towards our house. I guess because of that it makes it our problem. I still think they need to fix their gutter problem, though.

We probably need to talk to them anyway because there is not that much space in between our houses so if we do work, they may intrude on their property to be able to fix our issue. Also, there is an old sewer line that we just had snaked out, but the pipe is rotten and we may need to replace that also. She will need to know if we are doing work in between the houses and make sure we don't do anything to their property. Oy!

Re: What is your opinion on this?????

We had/have a very similar problem. Our neighbors property pitches towards ours and all of their rainwater drains onto ours (it looks like a river flowing under the fence), to the lowest point which was a window well for the basement. Our basement would flood with every heavy rain event.

We considered mentioning it to them but we were able to fix the problem ourselves through grading and a sump pump. In your case, because it's an easy fix like gutters, I would mention it to her. If I found out that my neglect was causing such a big issue for my neighbor, I would want them to tell me so I could fix it right away. Maybe start the conversation off with letting her know about the sewer line and go from there.

After she fixes the gutters, if it still comes into the basement, you should look into regrading.

Good luck!
