Pool Alarms...
I just got a note from my pool company that NYS has passed an alarm law.
Anyone know anything about this?

Brief Summary of Alarm Requirements for Residential Swimming Pools:
Every swimming pool that is installed, constructed or substantially modified after December 14, 2006 must be equipped with an approved pool alarm which:
is capable of detecting a child entering the water and giving an audible alarm when it detects a child entering the water;
is audible poolside and at another location on the premises where the swimming pool is located;
is not an alarm device which is located on person(s) or which is dependent on device(s) located on person(s) for its proper operation.
A pool alarm must be capable of detecting entry into the water at any point on the surface of the swimming pool. If necessary to provide detection capability at every point on the surface of the swimming pool, more than one pool alarm must be installed.
Pool alarms are not required in:
a hot tub or spa equipped with a safety cover or
any swimming pool (other than a hot tub or spa) equipped with an automatic power safety cover

Yeah see this is what I don't get. Our pool was installed on or around 2006. Why wouldn't it have been an issue then?
And how does it detect a child vs a regular person?

It WAS an issue then, but not law. Over the past few years some children have snuck into neighbors pools, ultimately dying. It has become such a difficult thing to deal with that they are now going through with pool alarms. You can get a good one for a cheap price, so it shouldn't be a problem. Those with children should definately have it, but they are needed for other children in the neighborhood. (Yes, every parent should watch their child, but how bad would you feel if you found a random child floating in your pool? Doesn't necessarily matter who is at fault, it will haunt you for a lifetime.)
It doesn't detect a child vs an adult. If a drunk adult decides to go skinny dipping in your pool, the alarm goes off. Look at the different alarms. Many go off on how high the 'waves' get. If a child falls in, the waves get high enough. If a leaf or twig falls in, not so much.

of course Id be horrified but I'd also be wondering how a chlid jumped my 6 foot locked fence without adult assistance.
When you say reasonable in price, what do you mean by reasonable?

I'm a bit surprised that there is any resistance to pool alarms. If you go to wikipedia or any legal website and look up "attractive nuisance," there is a lot of information about this.
When I was a kid, 2 groups of neighborhood kids got into a fight. One group ended up running from another and a guy I knew climbed a neighbor's fence. He fell right into the pool. He was fine, just really, really cold but he was lucky that the weight of his clothing was not an issue.

I wouldn't say I'm resist to an alarm anything to keep my kids or other kids safe I am all for, but I wish they would make a product that will work. I spent over $100.00 on a pool alarm last year that was a piece of junk. (and this was the best there was) It was for an above the ground pool and it would go off at random times a loud annoying sound. I was worried that it would go off when i wasn't home or at 5:00 in the morning and annoy the neighbors.
I do have locked gates at both entries to my back yard. But i have a toddler at home that i am worried about. Anyone know about those wrist band alarms, though i hate to rely on something i have to put on and she has to keep on.
