Newborn crying/body language question

Has anyone had experience with their baby stiffening their whole body (stretching legs out) and flailing arms around while crying? My DS will do this sometimes throughout the day (mostly after feedings and at night)

Gas maybe??

TIA!

My DS does exactly what you described.
I think he has acid refulx but it has not been diagnosed by a DR.

The only reason I think it may NOT be acid reflux is because he rarely spits up/vomits. He is mostly breastfed (pumped milk through bottles) and given formula at night sometimes. He eats 4 oz every 3-4 hrs and never drools. Maybe really bad gas??

Re: Newborn crying/body language question

I don't have experience with this but don't rule out reflux like another poster said, some babies can have silent refluc which is reflux with no spitting up.

Is it possible that baby is still hungry and this is why he's crying? Sorry I can't be of more help Chat Icon

Re: Newborn crying/body language question

I'm going to call the dr. tomorrow and see if maybe he thinks it's a reflux issue. The thing is that he is always hungry. Since he's not spitting up I took that as an indication that he is still hungry since he continues to suck and doesn't spit up. Could I be overfeeding him?? He gained 1.5 lbs in one week and the dr. said he's great. He literally will fall asleep in my arms and wake up out of nowhere hysterical crying, stiffening, his body, and moving his arms rapidly. It seems like he's in pain. He's been home now for over a week and this has only been going on last 2-3 days but getting worse! I am so unbelivably tired and at a loss as to what to do.

My son never spit up when he was diagnosed with reflux. It was the stiffening and other body movements that I knew something was wrong. When he has a bad flare up, he spits up...

good luck & can you please post an update. I am interested b/c you are describing what my DS does. All he wants to do is eat.. seems that he feels better when he eats & then 30 min later he stiffens his legs & arches his back & begins to scream. The only thing that quiets him up is me getting him to nap.

my DD does this - we think it's reflux and just started her on zantac. she also constantly wants to eat but doesn't eat very much in terms of quantity unless it's been 2 1/2-3 hours, which is very typical of reflux babies - trying to wash down the acid.

Re: Newborn crying/body language question

DS did the arm flailing and would stiffen his back. He definitely had gas issues going on and a little reflux too.
