I am not patient enough or talented enough to blow it out with a hairdryer. I bought a Chi flat iron and do each section when my hair is damp. How bad is this for my hair? It lasts about 3 days, so it actually ends up saving me time in the long run. Why don't more people just use a flat iron instead of blowing it out AND using a flat iron? I don't know...blowing it out is so much more difficult for me...just curious as to why more people don't solely use the flat iron. TIA!

It would never work on my crazy, thick hair. Ever. I tired it and it looks terrible and never really straight.

oh, ok. I have fine hair, but a lot of it. I guess that makes a difference in the flat iron world? Chat Icon Chat Icon

My hair stylist always told me not use the iron until my hair was completely dry, so that's what I do.

I'll use the blow-dryer but not worry about styling at that point - just kind of messy-dry it using my fingers to work through it, then I'll go to town with the iron.

good to know....maybe I should do the same and use the flat iron when my hair is dry....

Chat Icon I tried to flat iron it. I got about half way through and gave up. 30 minutes wasted.

I got the Instyler which is a hairdryer and flat iron in one. I haven't tried it yet but when I do I will let you know.

Just looked in your album. Wow, you do have curly hair! I would never have known without seeing that picture. You do a great job straightening it!

I have the same kind of hair as you, Johnsae. Fine but a lot. Although mine is wavy so I can usually do it with a hair dryer alone. So maybe a flat iron would work for me too. Do you do it on wet or dry hair?

ETA: I see you said damp hair.

You should really only use a flat iron on comepletely dry hair. You risk damaging your hair if you do it on damp hair.

Re: I just started straightening my curly hair....

my sister is a stylist - she avoids the flat iron like the plague - and she has one of those obnoxiously expensive ones .......Even w/ me - I blowout/straighten my hair MAYBE 5x a year - she won't flat iron it b/c it's so damaging.

And don't do it wet !!!

ETA - AND WHY ARE YOU STRAIGHTENING YOUR HAIR ??????????????

Re: I just started straightening my curly hair....

I have thick curly hair as well and when I straighten it, I have to either wait until it air dries and then use a flat iron or InStyler or use the blow dryer and then one of those two. My stylist always told me to not use the flat iron on wet hair because it literally fries the hair and it's almost impossible to fix if done too much.

I agree! it fries your hair if you straighten damp hair...

I try to minimize heat damage and I usually let my hair air dry and then smooth it out with a straightener. I do have naturally straight-ish hair so the iron just gives it a smooth sleek look, but I find that my hair sizzles and hisses if it's not entirely dry. If I'm in a rush I'll blow it first and then straighten it but I try to avoid this... but I never straighten wet hair.
