Good source to read up on BFing?

Are there any good books/websites about breastfeeding that aren't over the top (i.e. La Leche).

Looking to read something a little more laid back that states the benefits, possible flexibility (EBFing vs. supplementing), etc.

Hoping to take a "play it by ear" attitude but want to read up on it as much as possible without being sucked into a BF cult Chat Icon

I completely agree! Honestly, I'm not planning on reading much. I was just going to take a BF class in my 3rd tri and hope that someone at the hospital would show me what to do. I just don't want anyone to bully me into it and make me feel bad about myself if it doesn't work out.

I love the book Breastfeeding Made Simple. Its presents every argument with reliable research.

Baby magazines sometimes with articles give a lot of good foundation too.

Some things I didn't realize until I started reading:

Skin to skin contact as early as possible after birth will help your milk production

You breastfeed every 2 hours when baby is newborn, less if baby sleeps through the night.

You breastfeed 10 minutes on each side, never more, it will stimulate to make more milk. You can keep switching, just don't sit on the same breast for more than 10.

That's such a strange thing for a book to say... There were times when DS BFed on 30 minutes each side as a newborn Chat Icon I was only engorged in the very beginning, like everyone else when their milk comes in, and BFing for more than 10 minutes never affected me at all Chat Icon

I personally disagree with the last two things you wrote. Everyone is going to have a different take on BFing though. You need to figure out what works for you. Whatever you do, make sure you speak with a lactation consultant in the hospital.

I never bought a book. I took a BFing class and read a lot of posts on here. Kellymom.com is a great resource. IMO, nothing fully prepares you for BFing.

Not only that, but the hindmilk is so important for a baby. The baby should empty the breast before switching sides.

Me too. IMO you breastfeed a newborn on demand. And 10 minutes on each side isn't enough time to get the hind milk

Re: Good source to read up on BFing?

Its just guidelines, I understand your views and opinions, every woman is different as every baby is, a lot of it is just instinct.

but this is why I felt important to remember to do it:
my pediatrician recommend the 10 minutes on each side
and
I read an article on breastfeeding in "Pregnancy and Newborn" October 2009 issue that basically repeated what he had explained to me about breastfeeding
and also
I have a book by a doctor that taught my DH in med school, says something very similar. I don't have it now, but If anyone really wants to know I can get the details of it.
