This crosses all language barriers. I am fluent in Italian but cannot read my cousins' facebook because they use so much internet spelling like ke for che and shortening words etc. It is so frustrating LOL I can't be nosy!

Please....I cannot stand it!!! There is this one chick from my high school that misspells everything. I even called her out on it and she said "LOL". I'm not great at grammar, but something about misspellings KILL me.

same with me... in spanish.
i'm going to assume that "ke" for che is the same as the spanish "k" for que... which is "what"... drives me nuts lol

I need another masters degree to read my teenage cousins FB statuses
What I find worse is trying to "read" rather understand text messages that I recieve from friends. This one friend is 30 years old, I feel like I'm reading a 12 year olds text. I can't tell you how long it took me to realize that L8R was later

Its apathy and laziness
And its sad :(
I was brought up to always try and use proper grammar and spelling so when I see supposedly educated adults using shortcuts in emails that you'd expect from teenagers (2u, l8r etc) it makes me cringe.
Only time I use those spellings is in text messages
where I'm limited to a certain number of characters.

Ugh, I am with you ... but many people will use the argument that it's an informal setting and so they don't feel they need to be grammatically correct or spell everything correctly.
To me ... I don't care WHAT the setting is ... I always try to write as "correctly" as possible (without consulting any stylebooks) ... but I was an English major and a former spelling bee champ, so that probably influences me somewhat!

I think people just don't think of it as a place to be concerned with spelling, grammar, etc.
The same thing happens here. People don't capitalize, worry about spelling, they use chat abbreviations, grammar is all over the place.
Personally, I try to resist the temptation to use this kind of "shorthand" form of writing, regardless of the forum. I think the more we see it, the more society becomes accustomed to it and the less people differentiate between this style of writing/communicating and proper writing in other, more formal arenas where it is not appropriate.

It irks the hell out of me when my friends daughter talks about skool. REALLY??? one extra letter would of tired you or something??
