oh wow, I don't even know what to say

I asked someone in the building about a public school over here, by us, where DD will be going to pre-k when she is 4.
This guy has 2 kids , so I figured he'd know. We just moved in the area , so don't really know much.
Anyway.... this guy mentioned another school also not far, WHICH IS FREE, but I know this is a school for special needs kids.
(I know this bc someone else mentioned this school a while ago, both her kids go there . So I went there once asking for a booklet and they told me it was ONLY for special needs kids. I was very surprised , bc the person who told me about the school never mentioned this)
So I said to this guy : "isn't that for special needs children?"
Him "no it's not only for special kids , if you need anything let me know and I will help you guys out, I know someone inside"
Me "are you sure? bc I went there once and they told me it's only for special needs kids"
Him " go again, they won't remember you, just tell them she is bilingual and can't communicate properly, that she has some problems and needs help, let me know and I'll talk to the person" Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
He actually had a nerve to tell me "you know you can have your DD evaluated, just tell them she has problems and get a letter from them"Chat Icon

I was so shocked that I couldn't even say anything, I just said thank you and walked away.
So it looks like 2 of our neighbors have kids in this school bc it's free, even though their kids DON'T have any special needs Chat Icon I just can't believe thisChat Icon

Are you sure about that?

YES you can have your child evaluated, but that doesn't mean they will qualify for services... KWIM?

It definitely sounds that way, but wouldn't he have needed some documentation? Unless his kids do have some type of special needs. There is such a broad spectrum, they may have something that the school offers attention to..KWIM?

Bt, yes, I may have been Chat Icon too.

That's pretty ballsy, but I wouldn't be so quick to jump to the conclusion that your other neighbor used this guys connections to get her kids into the school.

Wow that is crazy! I don't know if I would believe what he said because most schools like that do require evaluations. You can't just have a "connection" and get in.

I'm pretty sure they did , the woman and this guy are cousins and they live next door to each other.
And I'm not really jumping to any conclusions....Chat Icon

That is plain weird if you ask me. And why would you not want your kids in an environment where they would thrive. I think that is sad and it takes two spots away from children that actually need the attention. That makes me a little mad.

Honestly I don't even know how the whole system works, all I know is what he told me.

The woman (his cousin) told me a while ago that this is a great school and we should look into it, she said both her kids go there and she is very happy with them.
She was talking about it as if it was just another public school and not for the special needs children, that is why I went to get more info (it's a block away from our building) and was told it's only for special needs children.
edited for spelling, lol. kids not lidsChat Icon

That is so sad. What some parents wouldn't give not to NEED a Special Needs school and they are sneaking their kids in?

Sounds like beating the system just to say you did.

Re: oh wow, I don't even know what to say

I think something is missing from this story. I have a DS in EI and I find it hard to believe that someone could a.) have their kids "pass" as special needs or b.) get them in without any kind of evaluation.

If the story is true, it certainly isn't a school I would want to enroll my child in.

Not sure what you mean, but I don't think he would lie about something like this , I mean who would make up a story like this? and why? and I certainly am not making it up..... and if he did lie about something than I don't know, can't speak for him...

My sister worked for Early Intervention Services and I cannot even tell you the amount of people that knew doctors that would sign off on evals to say their children needed services even though they didn't. My sister got so sick of it that she left the agency because she was tired of seeing kids that really did need services not get them because they didn't know the "right" doctor to go to.

I'm confused by this, even if the ped sends a script for an eval, it doesn't mean the child gets the service.....

And furthermore, to the OP, a lot of special needs schools have mainstream kids in them as well...

ETA-And his facts could be wrong, I agree with the AP that said if this is true, I wouldn't wantmy DC going there

i'm a speech therapist... EI is different from the preschool programs. the preschool is run by the school district, so the kids there have to meet the schools criteria... its not really just a matter of getting a doctor to sign off.
to the OP... a lot of times the schools preschools "special needs" classes also have a few kids in them who are "typical", as a model for the special needs kids. so maybe thats why his kids go there?? the lists are usually long, because everybody is looking for free preschool... but maybe if he know somebody that works there, he was able to get first on the list or something?

Yes I understand that and I've heard of that .

BUT as I posted above, I went to that school myself , asking for more info, they asked if my DC is a special needs child , I said no and the woman said to me " sorry mam, but this is a school ONLY children with special needs"

OK I see that some people are very confused by this whole thing, AS AM I.
I simply posted exactly what the guy said to me!
Nothing more, nothing less.
Once again:
a) I don't know how the system works
b) I don't know the guy well enough to know if he was telling whole truth and nothing but the truthChat Icon
I WAS JUST VERY SURPRISED (to say the least) when he offered to "help" us to get our DD in this school even though he knows DD is not a special needs child. Basically he was telling me to lie and cheat the system Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

That's all.

AND JUST TO CLARIFY WE WOULD NEVER DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS, EVER.
