Green Poop and EBF

My DS has an occassional green poop now and again. I know this can be caused by a food sensitivity or a fore/hind milk imbalance. But, if it is only once in a while, is it a problem? Today DS snacked alot and instead of putting him back on the breast he last snacked on, I switched. I probably should have offered the same one as he last took. Could that cause today's greenness? Thanks for any insights.

Re: Green Poop and EBF

DD sometimes has green poop but my ped said not to worry. It hasn't coincided with any gas or pain issues so I'm not too concerned with it.

Re: Green Poop and EBF

Sometimes green poop is associated with a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance (meaning DC drinks a lot of the first milk that comes out of each breast - the foremilk - which is thinner and less fatty than the hindmilk). The poop can be green and watery. Since you said he switched between breasts a lot today that might very well be it. Tomorrow maybe try emptying one breast at a time and see if that changes anything.

Either way if he doesn't seem bothered by it I wouldn't worry Chat Icon

yes you are right about the foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. i had that too so would feed from the same boob for 2 feedings & that helped. my ped. often said it could be dairy sensitivity but i don't think so as much. it's not a problem unless your DS is in pain or really fussy.

DD almost always has green poop! I never thought there was something wrong since the Ped said as long as it wasn't hard and black or had blood. I bf and ff. Usually there will be a huge green poop then the next day will be a yellowish green and seedy. Argh. I feel like I try to do everything I can to give her breast milk and it just doesnt seem to be enough! How can I get more hindmilk if I'm not producing enough! Chat Icon

When I asked my ped, he did not get technical about it and said it was normal as it was not all the time. So I was not concerned.

I agree. If it's all the time, I might see an LC, but if it's only once in a while it may be because for a few feedings the balance was off. As long as your DC is gaining weight I wouldn't worry about it.

Same here. Ours said as long as it's earth tones we're good.

My DD#2 had bad reflux and colic. They tested her diaper when we saw a GI and they found no blood - both the ped and the GI who saw her green muscusy diapers said that it was perfectly fine. I had also read it could mean a milk allergy. IF you are concerned talk to your ped.
