Re: Statring to think about...
I have always loved the idea of container gardening. I would love a huge assortment of plants (flowers, vines, etc) with another section of herbs/vegetables. Since you have a deck, I think it would be great since you could put pots on the steps.

Your best bet would be to upload pics. Then you're sure to get more answers...
I'm no help - our yard is dirt and grass.

Hostas will grow anywhere and prefer shade. Coleus also love shade but are annuals. Daffodils do well in shade but are bulb flowers so if you have rabbits or a lot of squirels in your yard they may dig up the bulbs. Ferns are good shady plants. There are a ton that do well with part shade - at least 3 hours of sun a day.

Re: Statring to think about...
First, you need to know about sun and shade in your garden.
You need to do a map. It is really helpful.
Like right side of pool get morning sun for 3-4 hours. Other side is mostly shade. Then you can determine what kind of plants to get.
I love low maintenance plants. I Like perenuals because they come back every year. And I like evergreens (don't lose their foliage in Winter).
For bushes I like "dwarf". Because I don't want 5 ft bushes in a few years.
My personal favorites: Hostas Heucheras Varigated liriopes
Camelias Rhododendrons

Re: Statring to think about...
I'd love to help! Like the PP said, very first thing is figuring out sunlight, so the stuff you get doesn't die. The sun is lower in the sky now than it is in the growing season, so you will actually have more sunlight later.
Can we see pictures? View left, view center, view right? I'm sure there are a lot of options. Also, how much work do you want to put into them? Do you have inground sprinklers or would you be willing to run a big sprinkler a few times a week, depending on weather?
