lawyer help possibly w/ regard to homes

my father on Friday decided to play lumber jack when i was home sick in bed with out my knowledge cut down a long - very dead and hollow tree (no branches just basically a pole sticking up from the earth) the tree was small but as he was doing it - it fell on the neighbors roof. I was rather ****** after hearing a chainsaw, got dressed to go out to see that. The neighbor called the cops to get an incident report, came out and we chatted, took pictures. We took the tree off - looks like no damage outside of the gutter having a ding. I even said if their is anything wrong call us - we will figure it all out.

But as time is going on I am worried - my parents said if they sue us for damages that they will handle it since it was my father's fault. SUE??? I mean I understand if their was a hole in the roof/massive damage but we walked on the roof and inspected it and saw nothing. How long do they have to file to sue us before its been too long? I want to know how long do I have to worry? I mean even though its not my fault and its my parents i don't want this looming on us forever.

THANKS!

I think it might be something that would go through your home owner insurance- I would maybe contact your agent or maybe someone on here knows

eta- if you do need an attorney- I have an excellent one

yes we did take pics while up on the roof. I would think so as well but my parents don't want us using the insurance because most likely our rate will go up since my father did this and not I.

They have 3 years from the date that it happened to bring the suit. I believe that your homeowner's insurance would cover that.
