youre comparing apples to oranges, by the time the task force was brought up in regards to smithtown, it was just being discussed as to what was being done to combat the problem and how the community was addressing it in regards to the comments about it being swept under the rug. No one was discussing it in a Smithtown vs. Shirley way. No one said it wasnt commendable either in the other post that the people of Shirley were trying to clean up there town, that was just mentioned to show the people who were claiming there was no problem in S/M proof that there were in fact issues.
I know we are not posting that thread now, but I'm 100% SURE that there was NOT ONE person that said Shirley/mastic has "NO PROBLEMS", everyone aknowledged problems. There was some debate on the severity of them. Since I own two houses in Shirley and I've attended local meetings to learn about the issues because I don't live there AND I have a child that attended a school district on par with Smithtown that is only now addressing the problem that has been brewing for years and he's a heroin addict, I'm pretty sure I have a MUCH better perspective to compare apples to apples than most here. You and I are just not going to see eye to eye on this, and I'm fine with it. Thats what makes the world go 'round.
see eye to eye on what, I was NOT debating anything with you????? Just saying that the tasks forces were brought up in each post for two completely different reasons. As for just owning homes in S/M, I have lived in and currently still live in Smithtown my entire life, not just a comparable district.

Re: Spinoff to the Mastic comments
Posted by browneyes I hung out with all sayville kids in my Hs days and i would of never considered it a "nice" area. Yes there are nice homes in the town and parks and SD, however almost ever kid i ever meet had a drug or drinking problem. If u needed any drugs sayville was where you found them. I cant speak for it now since i have not hung out there since i was 18 but i do know that the ppl i knew didnt make to much of themselfs, IMO. Agian like someone said be4 its kids w.money and nothing else to do i guess. I dont think this is everyone who lives out there but there was a very big handful of them.
_please dont take offense anyone from this area, I am a frim believer that it dosnt matter where u live its HOW you raise ur child _
I know you said not to take offense at this statement, but it's impossible not to. I've lived in Sayville my entire life and had a very different experience than the one you had. I consider it a nice area and had a great childhood here. I've chosen to raise my family here.
I'm not saying that people didn't drink or do drugs when I was in high school, but I didn't run in that circle. I agree with your statement, "it doesn't matter where you live, it's how you raise your child." My parent raised me right, and I had a great group of girlfriends that did other things besides drinking and doing drugs. Some of us had money, and some of us didn't, but we somehow managed to amuse ourselves without the assistance of drugs or alcohol.
Take it from me, someone who actually lived and grew up here, that back then, the drinking and drugging group was definitely the minority. To you, coming in from another town, it may have seemed as if kids like that were the majority, but I assure you, they weren't.
If all the kids from Sayville that you knew drank and did drugs, you were probably hanging out with the wrong people. The majority of my friends and acquaintances went on to make something out of themselves, including several girls on these boards. It's sad that you have chosen to judge the people of an entire town by the druggies and drunks that you made the acquaintance of.

I have kids in school in Smithtown. My oldest is in 7th grade and while there is not a problem in the middle school, my friends with kids at both high schools tell me they know which hallways to avoid.
Frankly, I don't love that, but I am 43 years old and attended a very highly regarded all girls parochial high school and the girl who had the locker next to me was dealing. It wasn't heroin but dealing nonetheless.
I also have friends who teach and/or have kids at very well respected northshore Nassau county districts that tell me heroin is very much a problem there.
But what I find the most troubling is that a good friend of mine is a psychologist with Pedersen Krag and she tells my they have offered to provided free drug awareness/prevention clinics to many Nassau/Suffolk school districts (KP, Commack, Elwood, Northport and Smithtown to name a few) and all have refused. This just leaves me completely confounded. But I guess it all comes down to real estate values. How very sad.
they all also have their own drug awareness programs - ie "in the know" in KP, they are both addressing the issues very publicly, is it possible they just didn't have a need for your friends drug program?
Honestly, I don't know but my friend's impression is that the districts don't want to call real attention to it as it reflects poorly and puts budgets at risk and that parents while they are "concerned" don't really get it or think it can touch them.
I have attended the meetings in Smithtown and have a lot of friends and family in KP and Ft Salonga who are active in the schools and I get what my friend is saying. My impression is that there is a level of disbelief, I even had a neighbor say to me "I pay 18K in taxes" as if that insulates her family.
I'm not sure what I want the district to do. But, it scares the sh*t out of me. I am very involved in my kid's lives but even kids who are not inclined to do drugs have to navigate this situation and frankly that suc*s. I wish my almost 15K in taxes could insulate my kids from that.

Re: Spinoff to the Mastic comments
I don't live on LI nor am I familiar with either of these towns, however
I do agree with the PP in saying that drugs are everywhere. (I am not familiar with the current situation in Smithtown)
I also went to private school with "rich kids" and the drugs were there too. Just the same as the public schools.
I also have to say that you can "raise your kids right" and be a good parent and still have a child that gets into drugs. I've seen it happen with plenty of times.
I hope that in this day and age with the trouble in our economy, war, etc that we can see what a problem drugs are in our NATION.

Thats really not the case, there have been COUNTLESS meetings held in the school district building, with signs about them occurring on the firehouse sign, the SD sign, and on the homepage to the KP SD website is a link to "in the know" the KP grass roots task force developed in reaction to the drug problem.
Of course it scares you, it scares me as a parent. Like I said earlier, I did A LOT of drugs in HS (not heroin, but more than pot) and my parents did everything right.....my sister was captain of the cheerleading squad, so it doesnt all fall onto how you raise your kids.

Re: Spinoff to the Mastic comments
Honestly it just comes down to there are better, more desirable areas to live in other than Shirely/Mastic Beach that arent that much more expensive. At the end of the day I would say go with your gut and if you can afford to buy in a better neighborhood I would do it. IMO it is all about location.

Thank you FaithAnn. There are drugs in Sayville - there are drugs EVERYWHERE. I don't think it's worse in Sayville than any other town on the island.. it exists but in no way do I think it is a sweeping problem that effects the majority of the youth in the town.
And I'll be honest "It doesn't matter where you live, it's how you raise your child." resonates strongly because this is a very family oriented town - and while there are always going to be 'bad eggs', parents who are hands off and other challenges.. I can tell you from experience that the majority of folks in the community - business people, parents, school administrators - are very involved, caring and incredibly concerned about this town. I like to think the majority here are doing the best they can by every child.

Re: Spinoff to the Mastic comments
I grew up in Lindenhurst...I was an athlete, honor student, active in many clubs, and top 10% of my class. Most of my friends were in the same activities classes etc as me.
There was a herion and major steriod problem. I was never exposed in school but knew it was there. I went to MC Donalds on MOntauk Hwy one summer day with friends to get approached by a man asking us if we wanted some heroin. I found out that a good friend's sibling was addicted while I was in college, I was cleaning and watching TV and all of the sudden the person on the screen was a kid I grew up with, had sleep overs at their house etc....they moved out of the state to get away from their bad influences. While in HS someone I had known since 7th grade (not a friend but I knew him) attacked a person with a knife because he was high, didnt even remember the incident.
Lindenhurst did nothing at the time I was there to educate us on the issues. I am not saying it would have helped because HS kids are HS kids and they do what they want when they want! But they didnt do anything. Yet I would never turn people away from living there because I think it was a great place to grow up. Nice parks nice people...Yes there was a drug issue but I dare you to find utopia on LI where there are no drugs or crime.
And with that I had good friends in HS who went to Massapequa, Amityville, Sayville and I heard many issues of drug problems, etc. Its rampant ON LONG ISLAND, not just in certain towns. We live in an over privileged area and the kids are finding good and BAD ways to entertain themselves.
I live in Smithtown now. my ILs are in Kings Park. I dont stick my head in the sand, my MIL used to work in KP schools, she has many stories and we have had lots of conversations about the issue that has been news worthy for Smithtown. I know of the issues. I appreciate that they are making strides to help the issue. I know people who currently attend the school and have heard some of the stories both good and bad. BUt in the end I will choose to send my kids there while I educate them on the pitfalls of drugs and hope they make hte right choices because at this point I think the educational value of smithtown is great.
I cant say anything about Mastic/Shirley. I know people who live there who are very happy, people who grew up there and are still choosing to stay to raise their family evne though they have the resources to move to another town.

I'm not debating the fact that there have been meetings. As I said, I've attended them. But, as a parent of a middle schooler and as someone who is VERY involved in the district and in local sports, I may be a bit closer to this than you currently are. I can tell you that my impression, and the impression of MANY of my friends, is disbelief. This extends to th high school. I have friends who tell me the parents just don't get it.
With regard to not accepting free training from a treatment center, that seems to be universal and extends to many districts, not only Smithtown.
Again, I hope your right and the district and parents are doing what they can do, I'm just relating my impressions as a parent, who is involved in the community and school system, on a daily basis.
I think what your hearing on my end is frustration. While the district is dealing with this, I think residents cringe when they hear the words heroin and Smithtown in the same sentence.

I can honestly say I have been thrilled with the education my children have received in Smithtown. While I was happy with the elementary school, the middle school has exceeded all of my expectations. This extends far beyond scholastics. The teachers that I have met in the last 18 months, are professionals, who bring real world experience to the table. I have had three separate teachers privately tell me that my daughter is a great kid and they are always available to her to discuss anything.
So drugs aside, and yes I agree they exist everywhere, I've been very happy with the district.

Man - I lived in Smithtown all through school - I had no idea there was that big of a problem - I was such a dork :P
No, really, I knew of nothing going on but pot and alcohol.
I guess if you're a nerd like me, and all of my friends, you just avoid it
