Spinoff to the Mastic comments
I know someone will flame me, but this time, I don't mind. I accept & expect it, so no hard feelings.
So, I'm looking for a home myself & have been told to avoid Mastic/Shirely because of the SD and resale value. And honestly, I probably will avoid it.
However, I am first to say that it is a shame that beautiful new construction houses are built and are being sold for in the low 200s.
It got a bad reputation because of a small majority of people. The vast majority are hardworking and good people, I think most would agree.
However, I get disenchanted when people say to avoid Mastic and to look towards other towns.
So while I also will avoid buying in Mastic, I also will probably avoid buying in Smithtown, also.
Big shock, right? I grew up there, too.
I don't think anyone mentioned Smithtown specifically, but sure, great SD, nice area, no bad spots, no bad "areas"...but guess what?
Smithtown has a HUGE heroin/cocaine problem that is swept under the carpet. No one wants to come out and say it, and you don't read about it that often in the newspaper until a big event happens, but it exists.
There are needles found in parking lots of this area that has huge taxes, and while the SD budget always passes, there are also drug deals going rampant in the schools, mandatory drug meetings, and they are considering using DRUG SNIFFING DOGS, and offering kids $ to turn in drug dealers.
In this beautiful town, great community, there is a BIG ISSUE. A girl was hit by a driver on Main Street who they suspected was buying heroin prior to committing this tragic hit&run. I'd assume she was buying the heroin in Smithtown.
I love Smithtown but it is turning into a drug den. And again, it's a small number of people who are making it bad.
There also were 10,000 packets of heroin seized in the area, also, in November 2008.
In Decemeber of 2007, a teen from SHS stabbed his best friend while he was high on heroin and then proceeded to kill his friend's grandmother. This occurred in Nesconset, and google the name "Victor Chunga" if you can't believe it.
I've also known of a few people myself who have died from ODing on heroin who lived in Smithtown. In fact, ask someone who graduated from there, and they probably have heard the same, or know someone who has been in rehab. It is sad, and I hope one day it changes.
So yes, while Smithtown doesn't have any "bad areas," it has just as big of a drug problem, if not worse.
One day, I hope Mastic & Shirley can reclaim their good image, and I hope Smithtown does, also.
And for anyone who feels bad because people say that the Mastic town they live in is called "Mistake Beach," just google "Smithtown" and "drugs".
And I know it's hard to believe...Those beautiful parks in Smithtown for kids? read this http://www.newsday.com/long-island/evidence-of-drug-use-grows-in-smithtown-s-parks-1.1496758....here is an excerpt: At Brady Park in Smithtown, town park ranger Thomas Lohmann headed past the manicured ballfields and into the woods. About 100 yards in, as the path goes over a wooden walkway, he pointed down to an inscription that someone has scrawled with black marker: "Buns All Day," a reference to bundles, or 10 bags of heroin.
A little further along was a hangout, where among the debris was a homemade bong used to smoke drugs, fashioned from a green soda bottle. Lohmann said the rangers found needles here, too.

I can't comment on Smithtown since I am not familiar with the area. I have a lot of experience in Shirley/Wading river. My entire in-law family is from out east, I have family members that work in the district, and I am out there often.
I think a lot of people will say Mastic gets a bad "rap" because for just a few dollars more, you can buy in a town like Wading River which IMO is much nicer.
If you can buy a 200k house in Mastic with WF schools, and a 220k house in Wading River or Rocky Point with WR schools... I think many people that have no ties to either area would be choosing Wading River/Rocky Point.
I actually almost bought a new construction in Shirley about five years ago because of my family's ties out east. I looked at a lot of properties and a lot of land. Not buying at that time was probably the financially best non-move I ever made.

It's just sad to me that there are such hard-working & good people who work their butts off for a home on LI only to be made to feel as if they live on the scummy side of LI.
I don't see drug sniffing dogs in William Floyd, you know?
I just feel bad for EVERYONE who is good and decent and bad apples make it a bad bunch.

Im from Kings Park and currently live in Smithtown, and you are right, there is a HUGE drug problem, always has been, a lot of kids with a lot of money on their hands and nothing else to do. Hell, I did A LOT of drugs in HS....not cocaine or heroin, but enough....so I get it.
With that said, the SD is excellent, the town is fantastic, overall its a great area and when you are taking about smart investments, the fact of the matter is Smithtown has great resale value, Shirley/Mastic does not. Shirley/Mastic has a drug problem, but they also have 10 other problems that Smithtown doesnt.

I think a lot of towns have issues. Some bigger than others. I live in Sayville. I love it here.. I am the biggest cheerleader for this town.
But there sure is a heroin problem.
I've decided I can deal with the over-privileged kids making stupid choices as long as the school district is good, the community is strong, the neighborhood is clean and I have the strength to really trust that I am able to teach my kids to make good choices when it's their turn to be confronted with those issues.
We need to look at these places as a whole - not just the pretty stuff - and make realistic decisions.
I still think Smithtown isn't a terrible place to live. Not MY choice.. but a lot of people love it and thrive there.

ITA agree with you, but my fear is that if the drug issue isn't fixed ASAP, it will further deteriorate and get the same rep Mastic gets. Which is a shame, because both towns have potential & good people.
You never know, ten years from now, Smithtown past and present residents could be defending it...and I feel that while Smithtown doesn't have the other issues Mastic does (gangs, crime, etc), it will eventually if the drug dealing/use continues.
Heroin = murders, theft, drug lords, and people just acting erratic (like the boy who killed an innocent Grandma)
It's not smoking a joint and listening to good music anymore.
It's just scary.

You are totally right, but I think this is an under the rug issue in all "well-to-do" areas. There is this grass roots organization that has been formed....

i think this is an interesting link to show how widespread the heroin problem on LI is
I dont think its necessarily a town problem, I think its an island wide problem, that is hitting every town. http://gis.co.suffolk.ny.us/scdmi/

The difference is Smithtown has money. Mastic/Mastic Beach/Shirley does not. Does Smithtown have a welfare office like they do out there?

Re: Spinoff to the Mastic comments
I have to respectfully disagree about the heroin/cocaine problem in Smithtown being swept under the rug.
I do not live in Smithtown, did not attend Smithtown, have no ties to Smithtown, but it seems to me that Smithtown is making a HUGE DEAL out of the problem! They hold monthly meetings for parents/citizens, have an awareness group in place, circulate press releases and articles through Newsday, and work closely with the authorities to prosecute offenders to the fullest extent.
The reality is that there is a huge heroin/cocaine problem ALL OVER LONG ISLAND but maybe it's a matter of just the Smithtown wheel squeaking.

Re: Spinoff to the Mastic comments
the smithtown herrion problem has been ALL over then news, and in newsday like crazy.
While I agree its an issue, it has yet to lower the resale value of homes. It is still a very safe area and you can gauge that by looking at the crime rates.
I would still pick smithtown over mastic/shirley any day of the week.
No one is saying Shirley/Mastic is a bad area because they want to hurt people's feelings, they are stating the facts. crime reports, gang action etc.

I've been out of HS (again, not Smithtown) nearly 10 years and we had both of the aforementioned "gasp-worthy amenities". Consider it preventative care.
IMO, they aided in my safety and I was grateful there was money in the budget for it.
I would consider that a PLUS, not a minus!

she is right though, thats its the towns dirty little secret, its all over the news, but no one here talks about it. I bet if you ask my parents or my ILs, who are both still in KP, they would tell you they had no idea. Yet you ask me and my siblings and DH and his sister and we know.......we totally know.

I totally agree, it is a plus, but it's sad it even has to occur. I just wish everyone on Long Island, no matter what town they lived in, (and being that we pay such high property taxes in NY) should be able to live in a safe & nice community.
It is island-wide, but I think sometimes towns with more $$$ have big issues because there is $$$, KWIM?
Does anyone want to start a new area with me, with no drugs? And where dogs are for pets and not to find cocaine?

Oh .. it IS a wonderful family town. But there is heroin. Fortunately - I feel the problem is counterbalanced by a really strong community full of families willing to work to protect their homes and their children and their futures from what is rapidly becoming a massive epidemic on Long Island. Honestly - just about every town where there is some level of affluence seems to have a heroin problem on some level. It's all about how the community reacts as a team in my opinion.

I was reading an article just now to, that says the reason its moved to the $$$ areas now to, is bc its available here in powder form, so it can be snorted, making it A) easier to hide and B) it removes the stigma of a junkie since youre not injecting.
It also said, interestingly enough, the rise started bc $$$$ areas had kids addicted to pain meds and their parents meds and friends meds...but since the crackdown on that, or bc people know to look for it now and monitor their own meds...in turn making pills harder to get, they turned to heroin instead to feed their addictions.

ITA - I mean KPs already has its own grass roots campaign, they now hold assemblys in middle school here SOLELY dedicated to heroin use. I think the upside to Smithtown/KP is the districts have the resources to educate the kids and the community is REALLY strong here.

the only way to fix it is for the community to admit there is a problem. I think with the younger smithtown generation who stayed here, like myself, that grew up with the beginnings of today's problem (Im 30 now) or at least are aware of it through younger siblings, I think the more likely we are to react to it.
