Asking for references/previous work

We are about to "go with" a contractor. We've heard great things about him and his work. DH has seen his work and said it is quite impressive.

My Mother is also part of the decision (she owns half the house too) and she is being a bit picky.

Slight backstory: the last contractor that did work in our house pretty much did a nightmare of a job. Something that was going to take a week took 9, and in the end- the job was crappy.

Needless to say my Mom is very apprehensive that we aren't going with *her* guy. So, she wanted references and to see some of his work. It's a pretty big job, and quite a bit of $$ (anywhere from $75 ++)

I don't think it's an outlandish request. DH thinks we are being annoying. When he asked the Contractor though, he was very happy to provide several names and addresses (which I was happy about)

This is normal right? To ask to see work? Or are we being pains in the @sses?

No, it's expected. Good contractors will actually encourage you to look at their past work, since they are proud of it, and they like to show off what they've done. I interviewed 4 contractors, and they all had lists of people that I could contact.

your Mom is right. you should definitely get references and drive past work that he has done (if contract work is outdoor rleated). get pictures of his work, etc...

remember, however, that they will only give you names of people that had positive experiences. you'll never get a phone number from someone that wasn't happy with them.

When we had our home improvement business, we always included a list of names & phone numbers of clients in with our proposal. Most of them were even willing to have new clients come over to see our work.

Re: Asking for references/previous work

my friend is a contractor and he was the one who told me to go look at 5 different jobs a contractor has previously done before hiring them.
