Do your stairs squeak?
If you have a 2 story house, do the stairs squeak from the 1st floor to the 2nd floor? Basement stairs don't count, since they aren't normally built to the same standards as the living space stairs.
Ours used to squeak really badly, so when I refinished them, I glued all the joints, and now there is basically no noise at all.

Shawn, how did you fix them. I would love to fix our squeaks. Thanks.

I ran a bead of "Gorilla Glue" along every seam. Where the riser meets the tread, where the tread meets the riser, where everything touches the wood on the sides. On the steps where the walls are drywall, I used caulk. After it dried, I took a Dremel and sanded everything smooth.
The glue expands, filling in the tiny space between the boards, and connects everything together, so it's like one huge piece of wood, instead of dozens of individual ones rubbing against each other.
You can also go from underneath and use glue and/or screws, but I wanted to try the easier method first. Underneath means I would have needed to take out drywall on the basement stairs ceiling, work on the basement stairs, etc.

Re: Do your stairs squeak?
My DH just re-did all of our stair treads by covering them with basically a cap. He glued them down, and nailed them-they still squeak slightly. But that is the wood against wood. Much better than originally, but I wish there was no squeak.
Talk to me again in 15 years when my kids are coming home late, or trying to leave...I'll love the squeaky stairs.

Before I fixed the squeak, they had carpeting. Carpeting does very little to stop squeaking. If the underlying wood is rubbing against itself the wrong way, it doesn't matter what's on top of it. I just dealt with the squeaks with the carpet because I didn't feel like taking the carpet off the fix it before.

Re: Do your stairs squeak?
Nope. Our stairs our original to the house - built in 1890. They are REALLY thick wide planks (I think they are beautiful) and they do not squeek at all - very solid!
