Those with Slate tile (real slate) - What finish sealer did you use?
High gloss Semi gloss

This is for my fireplace in my LR.
TIA

We have slate on our bathroom floor and bluestone around the tub and sink.
We used Semi gloss for the slate.......but if you are doing this by the fireplace, you may want to go with a few coats of the higher finish.

Thanks!
Is the semi-glass too flat with not enough "shine"?

The semi gloss on our slate does not have a shine to it all. It's more of a sealant than anything. It's pretty flat....so if thats what you want to avoid........then DEF do high gloss.

I am not sure about the previous poster but I am glad I did not do slate in my bathrooms.
The slate "peels". I would say it's not heavy duty at all.
It could be the type of slate I got but I went through MANY boxes of slate tiles and disgarded a lot of them. I will return them but the "peeling" is obvious.
Many it's the tile vs slab.
Not sure!
I like it a lot as a my fireplace surround but glad I changed my mind for the bathroom floors. I would have been disappointed in it.

The big tiles on our bathroom floor are bluestone (very smooth) and have smaller slate tiles (4x4) (in between each row as a border). A lot of slate tile will fall apart. I wouldn't suggest it as the entire bathroom floor......b/c then you may have chipping issues if they arent sealed right.

we have slate in our laundry room, foyer, and on the hearth of the fireplace. I love it.
We used a semi-gloss sealant, as I'm not a huge fan of glossy slate.
There has been an occasional peel/de-lamination, but, you wouldn't know it unless you saw the piece that came off (slate is very variable and imperfect to begin with, which I think adds to its appeal). It hasn't been an issue at all - and I have it in high traffic areas.
I know what you mean about going through boxes and boxes - we hand picked each and every tile.

I ended up with semi gloss. I figured I would start with that and see how that it goes. I had bought the high gloss too which I could have done for a second coat just in case semi gloss was not enough.
I really like the semi gloss. Just what it needed without the over shine.
