AC Removal
We are taking out the built-in AC in our dinning room. This means we'll have a hole in the siding outside. Will a piece of plywood be enough to insulate for the winter? We'll cover it with plastic. Plan is to take siding from side of house (that no one sees) and cover the hole in the spring.
Anyone do something similar?

Re: AC Removal
No way will that be enough insulation from the elements.
THen when you remove the siding from the side that no one sees, it is also not a good idea for the house in the long term.

what do you suggest for insulation? we'll put new siding over the side no one sees, we're just taking it from there so it matches what we have.

Re: AC Removal
why not wait til the spring to remove the AC.
Or patch the outside of the hole with plywood and put in insulation between the plywood and the drywall on the inside and then cover the plywood on the outside with Tyvek. This might be enough but you run a risk of moisture getting in

Re: AC Removal
Insulation is really cheap. Just get a roll from HomeDepot.
Insulation
40 s/f is $9 Then, you can use all the extra insulation to stuff around any other cracks in the house....

Re: AC Removal
we're re-sheetrocking that room now, so if we want to remove the AC it has to be done now. i'm afraid of moisture getting in, but i heard we can use greenboard to help?

you can use green board but the inside isnt really the problem. you need to waterproof the outside and just plywood wont do it....by spring the plywood will be soaked. The plywood on the outside needs to be waterproofed thats why I suggested something like Tyvek. Here is the link to the website.
Tyvek
It is why homes are normally wrapped in to prevent moisture creeping in. Hope this helps. I am used to commercial construction but I think this would be the best way for a temp fix for a home.
