Question about Siding and What it exactly does?
My sister has an older house, plaster walls with no insulation and her home is pretty drafty especially the upstairs, they need space heaters cause it just does not get warm up there.
Will changing their siding make it warmer? And help keep the cold air out?
TIA

From what I understand, siding does not insulate. They might have to re-paper the house which would help with some insulation, but it's really not THAT insulating.
They might make insulated siding though.

Re: Question about Siding and What it exactly does?
There IS insulated vinyl siding, but it doesn't add a whole lot to the house. If the walls aren't insulated, that's where they need to focus. What I've seen done, is they can take off the old siding, blow insulation into each wall opening between the studs from outside, then put up vapor/wind barrier, and new siding. The other option is to cut holes every 16" along the walls and blow insulation in that way, from inside.

Thank you
This is what I am trying to tell them, aside from changing the look of the outside of the house, new siding isn't going to help the fact that there is no insulation. They refuse to comprehend that for some reason.

According to independent testing, Insulated Siding offers an industry system R-value range from 2.2 to 5.1
Houses should have at least R-13 in this area. So, even with the most expensive siding available, you're still only less than 1/2 of what you SHOULD be at.
