It really depends what is reasonable to you... While many people think consumers is reasonable, my mom got a quote from them that was 4k MORE than going custom... so she was getting better quality for less.
I think what you need to keep in mind is what your price per foot is.. some places charge by kitchen cabinet, some- like my Dad- charge per foot- so it doesn't matter what cabinet configuration you're getting in that foot- which is good because that way you get what you want.
A few more benefits to going custom: no dead space (i.e. filler) and no limitations to color combos (since custom places hand-mix their own stains/glazes to client specifications).

HOw big is your kitchen? i got a tiny one and we are thinking, i repeat thinking, of doing a new kitchen if we remove the boiler. couln't do it until tax time, but our kitchen is small...

I keep seeing how reasonable Consumers is on here but when we needed a pantry cabinet they wanted a considerable amount more money than HD for the same cabinet.

I just bought cabinets from COnsumers. I paid just over 4K (we are installing) and I priced the same cabinets at Home Depot and they were over 10K (again with no installation)
