I agree with you 100%!

DH has seen too many accidents with cribs at the hospital. Not worth the risk, especially since you can get a cheap crib for like $100.
safety is #1.

ITA. My parents wanted to use a 16 year old crib that belonged to my cousin and was being stored in my grandparents' basement. I told her there was no way DS would be sleeping in it. We visit them at least 1 weekend per month. My parents kept pushing it, but I held my ground. The standards have changed since then and I'm not willing to risk DS's safety. They ended up getting a PNP and recently bought a crib since DS hated the PNP. You can find a cheap, but good crib for under $125 or $150.

We have an old 31 year old crib and a newer one(about 9 years old from my eldest DD) and to be honest with you, the old one while yes it has the drop side- it is the metal rail drop side. Things were made alot better 30 years ago than they are today. When I bought my DD's crib 9 years ago it was a drop side and i did alot of research. The problem with the drop sides now and the reason why they are no banned is do to shotty construction and making things cheaply.
Needless to say- we spent $$$ on the crib 9 years ago and have contacted every agency to see if its safe and if the old one from when i was a baby was safe and not one place has told us that either one isn't safe.
So it's all a matter of how you feel- just because it's old doesn't mean its a piece of crap. If it's missing parts and doesn't go together sturdy-that's another problem- but you can get that with a newer crib also.

I agree. We had a similar situation. My brother wanted to give us his son's crib (which was over 10 years old) and I told him that due to safety reasons I could not accept it.

ITA! You did the right thing. First of all they are pulling drop sides off the market for good reason. Safety standards have changed since then. I'm 32 and came home from the hospital in my mothers arms...not a car seat. Go with the safer new crib!

I wouldn't use it.

From the cpsc website:

Old cribs made before CPSC and industry safety standards can entrap, strangle, or suffocate children. Old cribs with more than 2-3/8 inches between crib slats; corner posts; or cut-outs on the headboard or footboard present suffocation and strangulation hazards. Cribs with missing or broken parts or cornerposts higher than 1/16 inch also present a risk of death. CPSC estimates there are about 30 deaths per year in cribs, many of which are older, used models. Destroy old cribs and those with missing or broken parts or cornerposts higher than 1/16 inch. Use only those cribs that meet current safety standards.

I agree 100%. My parents take care of our DS m-f all day so we wanted them to have a crib. A friend of my mom's was giving her a crib and i was excited until i found out A) it was drop-side and B) that it was anywhere between 4-7 years old. My and my DH said no way! My dad couldn't understand it, started sarcastically talking about how we just love spending money blah, blah, blah - we bought a brand new crib.

If you didnt want it, I think you are right regardless of reasons.

Personally Id have loved my child to have something like that if its only used a few times.

I have a drop side and it was new when i bought it. AJ is perfectly safe in it. There is absolutely no way I think she's in any danger in anyway. I thought I had an issue and found that my husband had pushed a box too close and it hindered my own ability to pull it up. That was my fault (well his ) but not the crib.

To each their own.

I am not sure you 'overracted' since I doubt you yelled at your mom or something. Seems like you approached it reasonably and didnt hurt her feelings since she agreed with you.

No way I would use it! I took a baby basic class while PG and the one thing they said to never take hand me downs of is a crib or a car seat that are over 5 years old.
I also have a book about caring for infants and children and there is a big paragraph about not using older cribs. It is not safe IMO.

I'd probably feel the same as you. DD's crib was recalled between when she stopped using it & when DS was born. When I dug it out to set it up for DS, I found out it had been recalled. My parents told me to just use the one I had used as a baby. Although I thought it was a sweet idea, I remember that crib too well. It was a dropside & man was the side a pain bc of the mechanisms. I told them if my 3 year old one had been recalled over the dropside mechanism, I didn't really want to chance it with a 22 year old crib. They understood.

Maybe I wouldn't mind it so much for naps a few times at Grandma & Grandpas though. I would have to see it set up.
