decline genetic couseling?

Did anyone decline genetic counseling? My Dr wanted me have it but there were a few scheduling conflicts and my last chance to have it done would be this Monday...and thats even if they can squeeze me in. Otherwise I'm out of luck. My 12 week ultrascreen & AFP came back really good and I had my Level II today which also looked really good. Do you really think its necessary for me to have the genetic counseling still? I believe they want me to have it done based on my age (35).

Re: decline genetic couseling?

I went to the genetic couseling as a prerequisite for my amnio.
To be honest- you really don't need to go if you are not planning on an amnio.
It really didn't give us much info.
They ask for a family history for both of you- and they draw like a family tree of sorts.
They ask questions about your ethnic backgrounds, any genetic disorders that run in the family, what relatives died of what, etc.
I didn't find it provided me with any info I didn't already know...

They also explained in detail what the amnio is, what it entails and what it tests for...that was helpful to me since I'm having one...

But if you don't plan on getting one, I'd say you can skip the counseling.

as you know.. i had genetic counseling from kofinas.. and i didnt think it was worth it.. it wouldnt have changed my mind about anything.. ya know?

and if he wants it for your age.. then it would really make me not want to have the consult.. you are 35.. not 60. Chat Icon

I went b/c my dr kept asking me if I went yet. Iwas a carrier for SMA and CF. Personally, I found it to be a waste of time. They did not tell me anything I didn't already know. Maybe it would've been useful if I was going for amnio or if DH had been a carrier for any of the above.

Exactly the same experience as mine. With my 1st baby (I was 36), I didn't have an amnio and genetic counseling wasn't suggested in and of itself.

I had genetic counseling (I'm 38) and I actually found it very interesting and helpful. Did I change my mind about anything afterwards...no....but I just took it as additional information that was good to have.

I thought it was a TOTAL waste of time

The dr drew a family tree, I could have done that and saved my insurance company the $$

I only went for genetic counseling because both DH and I are Ashkenazi Jews.

I had a bad AFP score (although my NT scan and Level II were great!) and I was never even offered genetic counseling.

I had genetic counseling in the past and really dont feel like it was worth it. Unless you have a specific reason i wouldn't worry too much about it.

I had genetic testing and genetic counseling before we even got pregnant. My doctor recommended it when I told her that we were thinking of getting pregnant in a few months.
Do we need to do it again now that we are pregnant?

No, and you likely won't have to again. Your genetics don't change. So unless there was something out of the blue they were testing for that they didn't test for already, you are set.
