good cop bad cop sort of?

So DD is 12.5 months...she's very strong willed...we've been teaching her don't touch, no etc...When I tell her NO, she smiles and keeps on doing what she's been doing, when DH says it to her, she starts crying and stops what she's doing, so she obviously knows what it means and doesn't like it...but she completely ignores me when I do it, or should I say finds it funny when I tell her to stop something...any advice as to what I can do...I've tried saying it sternly, ignoring what she's doing etc...

Re: good cop bad cop sort of?

It's just the age at 12 ish months. We went through the same thing. They are testing the waters to see "Does mommy REALLY mean stop?" Just keep telling her not to touch, and remove her from the situation. Pick her up and move her away.

We had to do this with DS and the stereo knob-no joke 20 something times in a row one night. He kept going back.

Now, when we tell him no touch, he gets upset, but stops touching.0

I agree. it is a game of testing limits right now. Remove DC from the situation if she doesn't listen. Stay firm, good luck!Chat Icon

Re: good cop bad cop sort of?

Im the bad cop

I get to her eye level and look deep int her eyes while sternly saying no. That means sometimes its a "hey,.... NO!" but it works.

I do however believe in physical discipline tho *shrug* So if she steps into the bathroom i tell her sternly no, she stares at me like she's testing me.. if she goes a step in I pick her up and move her away with a stern NO. Then she kept pushing me so I firmly tap/slapped her feet. Didnt leave red marks or anything but she hated it and cried. Now she does NOT enter our bathroom for the world of her. She has free reign for her bathroom but ours is off limits. No I can't close the door, is the cat's litter box in there.

Other things she learns no means no. Pulling on electrical cords, going into areas that are unsafe, etc.

Hubby she ignored but he has been taking lessons from me and she's learning.. he is too.

It's definitely the age. I have also found that if I say "don't touch" "hot, hot, no touch" things like that, he responds much better than if I just say "no."
