I'm going to open up a Pandora's box here
Yesterday, at the Met game, our new closer Billy Wagner came out to "Enter Sandman" by Metallica. Of course, Yankee fans know this song as "Mo Rivera's song", as he has been the most identified with it.
I have my thoughts, but want to hear yours.
Not looking to start a Met-Yankee war here.

Re: I'm going to open up a Pandora's box here
This post I pulled from another site sums up my view perfectly.

  -----------------

Billy Wagner: 1995 MLB Debut Assumed Closer's Role: 1996. First Season as Opening Day Closer: 1997
Mariano Rivera: 1995 MLB Debut Assumed Closer's Role: 1996. First Season as Opening Day Closer: 1997

How can anyone assume that Rivera had it first?
Just because YANKEE FANS have NO CLUE WHAT THE CLOSER IN HOUSTON is doing in 1997, doesn't mean Rivera had it first.
I have NO IDEA who had it first. I have no idea what ANY closer comes into, except Rivera and Hoffman.

Re: I'm going to open up a Pandora's box here
Also.... I am VERY HAPPY... that Wagner pretty much said f' the Yanks and Rivera. The last thing I wanted to see is a p*ssy closer.
They both started using the song at the same time. They are both on the same level skill wise. Rivera simply had the luxury of playing on the better team his whole career.

There are no "rights" to songs... and if any Yankee fan is ****** about this.... all I can do is

Well I'm a Yankee fan and I'm not pizzed about it at all So please do not categorize Yankee fans in general
Quite frankly, I could care less 90% of the time WHAT goes on with the Mets, their new closer or otherwise I mean no disrespect by that statement either. The only time I really care about the Mets is when they are playing the Yankees. Any other game of the season, I wish them well, since they aren't our direct competition anyhow
This "Enter Sandman" story.. well to me, it sounds like a story that the MEDIA is just looking to PUSH to create yet another "NY rivalry" over (IMO anyhow)
  Just too too silly

Re: I'm going to open up a Pandora's box here
my opinion is that if wagner happens to like the song and wants to use it, he should be able to, but he should be prepared to accept the criticism from the yankee fans, since rivera is most identified with the song in New York. But, at the end of the day it's not "Mariano's song" He just happens to be the most associated with it. BUT, if the mets and wagner are only using the song to take a shot at the yankees, that's wrong. He's only played one game in New York and if he fails, he sets himself up as a laughing stock. At this point, shut up and play.

  Agree on all counts
I will say though that when the Subway Series rolls around, it WILL be really interesting if/when either closer is brought into the game and that song is played

Yes, true. In which case I think its really kind of stupid, but that's just me.
I suppose unless someone knows for SURE whether Billy Wagner used this song in his past (instead of just posting 'statisics' on when Wagner began as a closer ) then really there isn't much to debate, now is there

They both started using the song at the same time.

Do we know this for sure?? Or are you just 'speculating" based on the fact he started his career around the same time as Mo?

Re: I'm going to open up a Pandora's box here
I thought Wagner had been using that song for a while. He shouldn't have to give it up b/c a pitcher from another NY team uses it too. I think it's stupid to criticize him for using a song he has used for years.

This was a major debate yesterday on WFAN. If Wagner used it in the past, I don't see a problem with him continuing to use it.

i agree with your first statement red
  disagree with the second
i have to do some more reading on this
but if what pill says is true, then he wouldn't be biting off of anyone
if they both used the song historically, then he wouldn't be copying rivera
