demo has begun!
Contractors showed up at 9am ready to rock....DH & I are working so FIL is there to drive them all crazy. Can't believe when I get home the staircase will be open on both sides. Also putting in a new front, back and basement door....should change the look of the whole downstairs and really open it all up!
anyone else open the staircase of a cape?

We moved our staircase from the front of the house to the back of the house. The new stair case is installed but I didnt get to take a picture of it yet. The location in the front where the stair case and the boiler was will now be all open to the rest of the house. There is a thread on here maybe page 2 or 3 that has pictures of the work we are doing. Please post Pics

I grew up in a cape, many years before I was born my parents removed the wall on one side, moved the rooms around, relocated kitchen, dining bedrooms etc so when you walked in the house the stairs were in front of you. Off to the right was the dining room and kitchen area, to the left of the stairs was a living room and behind that was a bedroom (small) and behind the staircase was a bathroom.
I never knew it any other way but my BIL's old house had that wall on the one said and it felt smaller even though his home was bigger than my parents

thanks kelly! it does feel small...that's why we're taking the wall down and making that '4th' bedroom a living room. this way when you walk in, there's a formal dining room to the left and a living room to the right....stairs are in front of you.

that's exactly how ours is... You will LOVE the new lay-out. It's SO open!

when we were house hunting this is how many capes were.
