Concerned about DD's weight loss
We took Miranda in today because she has an ear infection and she was down 1&1/2 lbs since September. That might not seem like a big deal but she is SO thin to begin with. That put her back below 30lbs at 4. Her eating is so poor. We're working with OT and her sensory and behavioral issues but I feel like we just keep hitting a brick wall. Should I be concerned? Has anyone else's underweight child lost weight?

Re: Concerned about DD's weight loss
What does the ped say?
I gotta be honest, my DS is 2.5 and is considered on the smaller side and he is 29lbs....
Would she take pedisure or something to that effect?

Re: Concerned about DD's weight loss
Abby dropped a percentile but did not drop weight. She was never underweight, just small. We were told to feed her highly caloric foods but not junk. Foods like: wild salmon, potatoes, avocado etc. We were told to prepare in butter and olive oil and to use sour cream when we can. If she is eating so little, then the fat from these sources will not do her any harm.

Re: Concerned about DD's weight loss
My ped. didn't say much but to tell her to eat that it's good for her. Yeah that will work. I have always been happy with him and granted we were in for an ear check and I just happened to realize she lost 1&1/2 lbs since October 9th.
We have tried feeding her everything. Nothing is off limits. The problem is her extremely limited diet due to her sensory issues. She doesn't drink milk. Won't drink pediasure. No longer eats eggs. Only eats chicken nuggets. She basically survives on waffles and pasta with butter.
We have a GI appointment because she is often saying her tummy hurts. So we'll see where that goes. I love our GI so I will bring up the weight loss with her. The next step might be a pediatric nutritionist.

Re: Concerned about DD's weight loss
My stepdaughter never ate anything and was really skinny - when I met her at age 6.5 she was about 40 lbs - maybe... She is 13 now and doing ok - she will always be thin...

Her being thin didn't bother me. I kind of resigned myself to she's just a thin girl. Hey...lucky for her. I'm concerned with how much less she is eating than she used to (and it wasn't much then) and now coupled with the fact that she actually lost weight. She's always gained so this was concerning to me. Maybe I'm overreacting.

I don't think you are overreacting, it would freak me out too
I think speaking to the GI is a good idea, if you feed her the things she eats everyday will she eat them?

Re: Concerned about DD's weight loss
Turning 3 in 2 weeks, Josh finally broke 30 pounds and we had a celebration.
Does she eat cheese sticks? Yogurt? I would do everything full fat
do you think she will let you spread PB on her waffles?

LOL. We will do the same.
What about the yogurt drinks? I will put Christopher's in a sippy cup and mix with whole milk and he drinks it....
Mine doesn't eat meat either, just chicken nuggets, and I'm bad, if he has a bad day, I go to McD's and get him nuggets and fries b/c he will them
His new thing is cheese, wheat thins and apple slices, woudl she do that?
Milk shakes?

No to all Janice She occasionally will do a yogurt drink but it has to be in the container. Rarely and I mean very rarely she will do chocolate milk.

Re: Concerned about DD's weight loss
We have been going through the same things with Ava for 3 years now.
She has sensory issues..texture, temperature, smell..
She got Speech and OT. I don't really know how much it helped. She eats less than my one year old and has never in her life said that she was hungry.
to you because this can be draining. It makes life hard for the entire family. One thing that I can suggest is Horizon Organic Milk boxes. They come in Vanilla, Choc and Strawberry.
At least it's something. Fm if you ever want to talk.

Re: Concerned about DD's weight loss
Ella, at 3.5yrs, is still under 30lbs...she eats most things (no sensory issues), though in small portions. She LOVES milk, drinks pediasure, eats eggs, meat, pasta, etc. but she still doesn't pack on the pounds.
I can imagine how you're feeling. It would bother me if Ella lost weight - she has none to spare!

Re: Concerned about DD's weight loss
Have you tried making ice cream shakes mixed with pediasure? I was an underweight kid and the Dr. had my mom making me HaggenDaas ice cream(it is very high in fat) and pediasure shakes. It actually helped. I drank them everyday sometimes more than once.

Re: Concerned about DD's weight loss
Can she eat in front of the TV? Its a bad habit, but I swear he will eat 3 times as much if when we are done he can bring his plate into living room.
does she eat bananas? sometimes he will take his own little spreader, chop them up himself and dip in PB or chopped nuts.
This is an awful thing to stress. And maybe there is nothing to worry about, but its good to be proactive so she doesn't lose any more weight.
maybe a instead of a chore chart a meal chart? where she gets rewards for trying new foods?

I don't think you are over reacting either - I would be concerned as well - I meant to write more but then I had to leave and I hit reply without thinking...
I was going to suggest maybe finding recipes for the foods she likes and add some higher calorie things in there - like protein powder in her waffle mix, things like that?

I think we may try this because she has responded well to the chart with other things.
I swear we have tried everything to get her to eat. She wasn't always this picky. She's getting progressively worse and her OT had a behavioral therapist observe her during a session and she noticed that she immediately got anxiety when we did our OT snack time and she was presented with new foods to try.
Also as someone who has always been overweight I don't want to instill any wrong ideas about food with her so it feels like such a fine line to me. I don't want it to be a battle I just want to help her so she is healthy.
Thank you everyone for your input. It just helps to put it out there and get it off my chest.

We do the chart. Ours has a few more items than eating, but the top 3 are breakfast, lunch and dinner. If she eats at least a taste, she gets a check for that meal. After 1 week, she gets to get a small toy, have a friend over, etc. It really helps!
